In the early 1980's Stratford maintained roughly 12 x 2-car Cravens DMU sets for diesel services in the Greater London area of the Eastern/Anglia region. These were Camden Road to North Woolwich, Stratford to Tottenham Hale and Romford to Upminster. A few class 104's and later 116 sets were also at Stratford for the Wickford to Southminster branch. Both Southminster and Upminster went over to EMU operation from 12/05/86. The Romford-Upminster branch operation is seen here at Upminster station the Class 105 attract little custom while waiting to form the 14:11 to Romford. The single track 3½ mile long line had one intermediate station at Emerson Park was operated on a one train working basis and the same set would shuttle up and down the branch all day providing a 30min interval service. Although appearing to link the GE and LT&S mainlines there was no physical connection at Upminster as the branch train platform was on the north side of the LT District line. Adrian Nicholls.

The unmistakable outline of the Craven's Ltd class 105 2-car DMU. These pair are seen at Sheffield Midland on April 21, 1984 in the town of their birth as Cravens Ltd had their factory in nearby Darnall. When lightly loaded the bus style seats and alloy window frames along with the luggage racks could reach a crescendo of noise loud enough to drown out the diesel engines but they were a DMU full of character. The set on the left is seen idle between turns on the down through siding while in the platform sits another set waiting to form service 2H06 the 16.40 to York via Pontefract Baghill. Adrian Nicholls.

North Woolwich branch Cravens, 30/07/84. The unmistakable Stratford Depot adornment of a silver roof gives away the location of this Cravens DMU shot. A 2-car class 105 set is seen approaching North Woolwich with service 2E18 the 09.58 from Camden Road to North Woolwich. Adrian Nicholls.
A Stratford allocated 2-Car Cravens DMU set is seen waiting departure from the now closed terminus station of North Woolwich with service 2M21 the 10.40 to Camden Road on 30/07/84. This former Great Eastern Railway terminus had become a forgotten backwater during the early 1980's and it wasn't until the advent of Network Southeast the situation improved with the line being electrified as an extension to the North London line third rail network. Its closure on 10/12/2006 was brought about by the close proximity of the Docklands Light Railway in the same area and the fact the route from Royal Victoria Dock to North Woolwich is being used by the new Cross Rail line which would pass under the Thames at North Woolwich. Adrian Nicholls.
