The single line token exchange is about to take place, As a Cravens Class 105 Power-Twin formed of cars M50765 & M50804 arrives at Rufford with the 17.19 Preston to Ormskirk service on May 13th 1981. The Ormskirk services were normally in the hands of Derby built Class 108s and the appearance of a Cravens unit was not common. Martyn Hilbert.
Barrow in Furness station on 3 September 1975. In the grey morning light, where I had just been decanted from the overnight train from Euston - an LMS design 12-wheel sleeper - hunted abominably on long welded rail, but rode beautifully once we'd turned off the West Coast Main Line on to jointed track at Carnforth. Cravens diesel multiple unit M50766 awaits departure at 7.10 for Preston, partnered with a Class 108 vehicle. Tom Burnham.
Cravens set TY404 (M50766 leading) is seen operating the 3.37pm (approx) Leicester - Birmingham New Street at Nuneaton on April 28th, 1979, with a Class 100 DMBS on the rear. Michael Mensing.
With window bars fitted to the passenger doors - probably from its time allocated to South Gosforth - Class 105 DMSL M50766 is seen on Newton Heath depot on 1 December 1979. Brian Daniels.
An official image (Derby Works negative 58-234) showing the guard's van in a Cravens DMBS, presumed to be M50767. British Railways.
A Cravens triple set working the 5.57pm Derby - Crewe service seen south of Harecastle Tunnel on 23 April 1966. A few items of note: there are two DMBSs; the leading car - thought to be M50768 - is missing the lining between the cab windows; and the very light coloured roof of the TSL centre car which as a 1 on the closest door. Michael Mensing.
This negative was noted as "the last train Nottingham Victoria", but I'm not sure how accurate that is. Taken on Saturday 2 September 1967 the station officially closed the Monday after so there was likely no Sunday service. The three-car Cravens - the closest number looks like it could be M50768 - would probably be on a working to/from Rugby. Stuart Mackay Collection.
50768 has Barrow on its blind, Lancaster Castle, 2/8/79. It had just worked in on the late afternoon from Windemere. Note the handrail in the inside of the cab door, used for climbing up from track level. Robert Frise.
A Cravens DMU on arrival at Rochdale in 1975, DMBS M50769 is closest. John Law.
M50770 is at the front of a 3-car Cravens set in Birmingham New Street on October 24, 1964. It is standing empty at the end of platform 8, probably forming the 5.28pm to Derby. Michael Mensing.
A Class 105 power-twin (leading appears to be M50770) departs from Burneside station (on the Oxenholme - Windermere line) in late September 1975. Michael Mensing.
A Class 105 power-twin in Burneside station on the Oxenholme to Windermere line in late September 1975. Leading is believed to be M50770. Michael Mensing.

A pair of Newton Heath Cravens Class 105 Power-Twin DMU's were forming a Manchester Victoria to Kirkby service awaiting departure from Bolton on an overcast June 23rd 1979. Bringing up the rear complete with its paraffin tail-lamp was Driving Motor Brake Second M50771. The Power-Twin fleet were a familiar sight around Greater Manchester and Lancashire at the time, and the Preston to Colne service was virtually monopolised by these distinctive machines. A ride on a Power-Twin was an experience never to be forgotten. Pale green formica interiors, curvy-backed seats, and every imaginable metal item from the luggage racks, window frames and door surrounds would vibrate to various degrees depending on the engine speed. They had comfortable seating and a smell of warm diesel throughout each car. They were though to be quite rough and ready at the time, well-worn, but far superior to what was to follow, that promised so much (Class 142 Pacers). Martyn Hilbert.
Very much the daily routine at the time, a Cravens Class 105 2-Car Power-Twin DMU with DMBS M50771 trailing, departs from Bamber Bridge with a Preston to Colne service on August 23rd 1980. Martyn Hilbert.
Almost funicular style, as one Cravens Class 105 arrives at Bamber Bridge with the 13.46 Colne to Preston, another has departed on the 14.30 Preston to Colne working. In this scene from August 23rd 1980, DMBS M50771 passes over the A6 trunk road about to make its last stop on the way to Preston. In the foreground the old L&Y subway is still in existance, note the youngster on a 1970's Chopper pushbike waiting on the pavement! The Newton Heath based Cravens Power-Twin sets, dominated the services along the East Lancashire Line during the 1970's. Martyn Hilbert.
On a rather overcast May 31st 1980, Cravens Class 105 Motor Brake Second M50772 leads a service for Wigan Wallgate at Kirkby. Beyond the stop block on the other side of Glovers Brow bridge is 507025 awaiting the return journey to Liverpool Central. Kirkby had been a through station on the former L&Y main line from Liverpool Exchange to Manchester Victoria, but when the line was electrified from Walton Junction in 1978, the station at Kirkby was altered in a similar fashion to the layout at Ormskirk. A single line split into two halves separated by stop blocks with the electrics and diesel services terminating in the same platform. In this view the trackbed and the disused platform of this former double track railway are clearly visible, complete with maroon & cream gas lamp post. Martyn Hilbert.
A Cravens Class 105 Power-Twin with Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M50772 at the rear, was awaiting departure from Bamber Bridge with a Preston to Colne service on May 15th 1981. The Newton Heath allocated Power-Twin sets were once synonymous with the ex L&Y lines in Lancashire and were regular performers on the East Lancashire route from Preston to Colne. Just visible in the distance is the brick bridge that takes the M6 Motorway across the railway. The bridge was the first to carry a Motorway across a railway in the UK, with the M6 Preston By-Pass between Bamber Bridge (now junction 29) and Broughton (now junction 32) that opened in December 1958. Martyn Hilbert.
On the slow line at Winwick Quay, a couple of miles north of Warrington Bank Quay, a view of the rear of a Cravens (M50772 closest) and Park Royal DMU, as they head from Manchester Victoria to Chester/North Wales on 2 July 1982. Commander Bond.
The aftermath of a three-car Cravens DMU working the 13:00 Birmingham-Derby service hitting a trailer loading with 2 1/2 tons of manure at Catholme crossing (at Wichnor Junction on the Birmingham to Derby main line) on 15 February 1969. The three vehicles came to rest forming a triangle, M50774 closest, M59322 left to right behind, and the mangled wreckage of M50799 (which looks like it was in blue with a yellow panel) on the left. All were withdrawn after the incident. Stuart Mackay Collection.
