This is the old Sudbury station; the line was later cut back about one hundred yards and the former station site is now a leisure centre. Working on Colchester services are Class 105 DTCL E56114 and Class 100 DMBS E50346 on March 22, 1980. Jeremy Chapter.
At the northern stub of the surviving portion of the former Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway (M&GNJR) still in use as part of the national network, a Cravens Class 105 two-car DMU formed of cars E56114 & E51293 had arrived at Sheringham with a service from Norwich via a reversal at Cromer on April 29th 1980. The single platform terminus at Sheringham, complete with its BR Eastern Region dark blue enamel sign, opened on January 2nd 1967 enabling the closure of the adjacent level crossing and the original M&GNJR station (now owned by the North Norfolk Railway). The single platform was intended as a temporary station as the line was scheduled for closure. In the event, it has gone on to be upgraded to accommodate the new Greater Anglia Class 755 DMU's. A connection from the Network Rail line at Sheringham to the North Norfolk Railway was opened in 2010. Martyn Hilbert.
It's funny how you can curse things, but then years later find that they add a strange charm to a photograph. I'm not sure which is the most rateable here, the Cravens or the classic pushchair? The occupant of the latter if favoured with longevity must be over 30 now! This is Norwich set 59, E56114 + E51258 simmering at Ipswich before departure as the 10.48 to Lowestoft via the East Suffolk line. 9/9/81. Gerard Fletcher.

Photo taken on day two of the "Secret Five" mystery tours: five day trips on five consecutive days to mystery destinations from Weston-super-Mare and other picking-up points in the Bristol area. On 6 September 1980, the Fakenham and Dereham Railway Society GE/GN Joint Freight Lines Railtour ran with a pair Cravens dmu sets. Nearest the camera at March is 56116, then should come 51256, 56125 and 51271. Having visited Wisbech, the tour then ran to Sleaford, Bardney, Shirebrook and Lincoln before returning to March. Three weeks road learning at Toton, most of it on single unit DB975042 until it disappeared mysteriously on the last week. Here Guide Bridge Driver Norman 'Nobby' Robinson is seen here at the helm of the replacement 2 car unit, 56116 and 51124. Taken somewhere in the Hope Valley. Note the traditional brew can lid on the window sill! Arnie Furniss.
Reflections on Ernie Nield. Ernie started his railway career at Macclesfield in the dim and distant past when there was a depot there. You can tell by his face that he was of a cheery disposition. Taken through the window of the driver's compartment of DMU 56116 in April 1982, somewhere near Chinley, on our way back home to Guide Bridge from route learning at Toton. This used to be the first class compartment on this unit, it's full of first class railwaymen here! Arnie Furniss.
