Although the passenger services had ceased over a year earlier the Woodhead line still saw frequent passenger trains with diversions and football specials. On a lovely late spring day a diverted 1M42 the 1652 Nottingham to Manchester Piccadilly is diverted from the Hope Valley route (leading vehicle is M52064) at Dunford East on 26 May 1971. A Class 108 DMU sits in the bay platform at Carlisle on Tuesday 1st June 1971 displaying "Special" on the destination blind. On the through roads English Electric Type 4 Class 50 nos. 429 and 444 are double-heading 1M20 (Euston express). Ed Fulton.

1972

A 4-car set heads away from the camera north out of Newcastle in 1972. Three vehicle are of Class 108, the car second from front is a Class 101 TBS, indicated by its aluminium window frames and different roof vents. Up until the mid-1970s, South Gosforth (GF) depot, Newcastle had a sizable allocation of Class 108 DMUs among others, as well as the more ubiquitous Class 101s. The Class 108s were transferred away around the mid-1970s, replaced by Class 105s cascaded from the suburban services out of London King's Cross, once those routes had been electrified.
