A five-car DMU formation consisting of Class 108/104 hybrid M52053 & M53478 coupled to a 3-Car Swindon Cross-Country set, was stood on the Up Fast at Leyland station with a Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on November 2nd 1985. Martyn Hilbert.

With Globe Mill at Midge Hall dominating the background, A two-car Derby built Class 108 DMU formed of cars 54273 & 53940 had returned to its old stamping ground as it approached Narrow Lane occupation crossing (Midge Hall), whilst working a Preston to Ormskirk service on November 26th 1985. A Class 108 DMU in Wigan Wallgate station circa spring 1986. The DMBS closest seems to be 53629 judging by the remnants of the vehicle number written on the front. It was a Newton Heath vehicle until the May timetable change that year when it moved to Tyseley. Brian Ward.

Apart from the new trains, relatively little seems to have changed at Carlisle Citadel station over the decades, though the assorted trolleys visible here are certainly a thing of the past. In 1986, a Class 108, the mainstay of Cumbrian local services for many years, prepares to depart. The destination blind suggests a length trip of several hours to Preston via Barrow-in-Furness. Five years after the closure of the Woodhead route, Class 108/101 hybrid DMU on a Huddersfield-Sheffield service leaves Penistone station and trundles across what remains of Huddersfield Junction. Track recovery and gantry demolition began in earnest on this section the following year, 1987. Andrew Walker.
