This Carlisle-Leeds service appears to be carrying plenty of passengers as it approaches Horton-in-Ribblesdale on a rather overcast 28 August 1985. Andrew Walker.
A four-car Class 108 DMU is not a bad way to traverse the Settle & Carlisle line. A southbound working is caught here at Blea Moor in the summer of 1985. The train will shortly cross Ribblehead viaduct. The closest two vehicles appear to be E53643 + E59250. Andrew Walker.
The time is 11.15 a.m. on Friday 30th August 1985, and a Leeds to Carlisle service formed of a four-car DMU passes Dent station. The weather later cleared and these passengers might have had the chance to enjoy the scenery on the return run. The visibility in Dentdale was certainly minimal at this point in the day. Andrew Walker.

With the restored Class 503 EMU in the adjacent platform, a 2-Car Class 108 DMU with M53929 leading, awaits departure from Southport with a service to Manchester Victoria on September 28th 1985. That chap seems to be looking at something of interest inside the door vestibule of that 108. This was the period when the first generation DMU fleet was on the way out, and time-honoured scenes such as this became a thing of the past as shiny new Class 142s and 150s came on stream. Martyn Hilbert.

A Class 108 and Class 101 ready for departure from Birmingham New Street in October 1985. The PTE logo on the side of the 108 suggests this a service to / from the Manchester area. Ian Docwra.
A 2-car class 108 DMU set is seen on the truncated Macclesfield, Bollington & Marple railway at Rose Hill Marple station. The line beyond the DMU used to run through to Macclesfield but closed on 05/01/1970 leaving just a mile long branch line at the northern end of the route from Marple Wharf Junction on the Manchester to Sheffield mainline. With Marple being within the Greater Manchester PTE boundary I suspect that is the reason this stretch survived when the remainder closed. The DMU set seen here had just arrived with service 2H50 the 12.50 from Manchester Piccadilly and after the driver changed would return as 2H53 the 13.46 back to Manchester Piccadilly. Adrian Nicholls.
