Blackburn is a station that has changed beyond all recognition at platform level since this image on 22/08/85 showing a trio of Calder Valley class 110 power twin DMU's are seen arriving with train 1E11 the 13.05 Preston to Leeds. The one time grand 1888 built L&YR (Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway) station with its twin span trainshed roof and large yellow brick buildings was all swept away in 2000 when a new more modern station replaced it. The original frontage at street level survived in part being grade II listed but everything seen here was removed. Adrian Nicholls.

A Class 110 DMU sits at Manchester Victoria waiting to work the 14.55 to York via Todmorden on 3 October 1985. These powerful DMU's fitted with 180hp Rolls Royce engines were synonymous with the Calder Valley route via Todmorden and the class were known as "Calder Valley sets" for many years. They had spent most of their working lives allocated to Brardford Hammerton Street Depot for use on the route between York, Leeds, Bradford and Manchester but when the shed closed in 1984 the Calder Valley sets all transferred to Neville Hill Depot in Leeds. On the right in one of the station sidings is brand new Railbus set 142 006 only a couple of weeks old in Manchester PTE livery. Sadly in this case the new Pacer train wasn't in any way a match for what it replaced. Adrian Nicholls.

The class 110 Calder Valley units were not long for this world by February 1986 so I took the opportunity for a couple of shots in the bay platforms at the east end of Manchester Victoria on the 27th of that month. The light was very low inside the cavernous station, but I was quite pleased with the atmospheric outcome. The destination blind on this somewhat grubby unit states it is off to Southport.
