An official image (Derby Works negative 60/470) of a Derby built quad suburban set taken on the Wirksworth branch circa July 1960. M51864 + M59726 + M59746 are closest, the fourth vehicle should be M51863. Built for the services out of Marylebone, it would first spend time working from Neville Hill, Stratford and Toton. British Railways.

In late 1960 Stratford depot borrowed some Marylebone quad DMU sets to allow the replacement of the Great Eastern line electrics between Shenfield and Chelmsford to be replaced by steam and diesels while the overhead lines were converted to ac. Here a set led by M51679 (with oval buffers) is seen leading one of those services at Shenfield. British Railways.

After three months at Cricklewood this vehicle would move north to work Manchester-Liverpool CLC services. It spent six months allocated to Trafford Park then almost 25 years until withdrawal as an Allerton vehicle. Stuart Mackay Collection.

A BR Derby 4-car DMU passing Northwood station with the 10.05am Aylesbury to Marylebone train on 17 June 1962. This was the opening day of the Metropolitan Line modernisation between Harrow and Watford South Junction and the new station platforms on the right came into service on this day. Work has already begun on demolishing the old platform canopy on the left. John Cosford.

A Derby suburban quad set seen at Neasden on 15 May 1963. The leading car being with the cab roof come darker than the roof and West Ruislip on the destination blind - is recorded as M51868. Note the people standing trackside to the right, clearly not staff. Stuart Mackay Collection.

A down 4-car DMU (BR Derby/1960 on) leaving Wembley Hill 25 May 1963. I have not been able to find out what the 3T85 headcode means and the destination blind is not readable (it may have been blank). The train may have been a football Cup Final special as it is longer than the normal 4-car set one would expect to see on a Saturday. John Cosford.
