107 DMU

The Last Summer. Derby 107 431 departs Houston and Crosslee for Glasgow Central on a working from Kilmacolm. The Railscot website suggests the line was singled in 1973. Linwood, in the distance, was inconveniently sited for the station and trains simply sped past en route to Paisley Canal. Monday 14 June 1982. alicia hartman.

The Last Summer. Derby 107 431 (with 101 TS) on a Kilmacolm - Glasgow service, departs Houston and Crosslee station for Cart Junction. The Kilmacolm passenger siding doubled at Cart Junction in advance of the junctions to the mainline at Elderslie No.1 and No.2. Monday 14 June 1982. alicia hartman.

107 DMU

Taken quickly with limited further opportunities due to the impending closure of the railway! Eastbound 107 DMU catches some winter sun as it crosses the River Gryfe, half a mile west of Bridge of Weir station. It is returning to Glasgow Central on a working from Kilmacolm. Saturday 31 January 1981. alicia hartman.

107 DMU

Westbound 107 DMU is dwarfed by the Renfrewshire countryside as it skuttles towards the last stop at Kilmacolm. Probably between Fodston and Scart Farms in what some maps show as Strathgryfe. Saturday 31 January 1981. alicia hartman.

Glasgow Queen Street High Level and Set 347 idling away at Platform 4. Awaiting the next service on a dank Saturday evening. The centre car is still in rail blue livery. April 1982. alicia hartman.

Derby DMU and what might be Set 139 or 142 (see later picture) departs Bridge of Weir station for Kilmacolm with a service from Glasgow Central. The line was originally due for closure that day but was reprieved at the eleventh hour. This might explain the distinct ‘lack of interest’ in the departing train! However, the line soldiered on for a few more years and the end ultimately came in January 1983 with a final squeeze on PTE rail subsidies. Saturday 31 January 1981. alicia hartman.

107 DMU

Derby Class 107 DMU arriving at Bridge of Weir with a Kilmacolm service returning to Glasgow Central. The leading DMS here is numbered as Set 142 but the rear DMBS seemed to show Set 139 - see previous picture of probably the same Unit heading to Kilmacolm. Note the abandoned Greenock bound platform in the foreground. The skew bridge over the station is the parallel A761 to Kilmacolm that replacement bus services would follow upon closure of the railway. Saturday 31 January 1981. alicia hartman.

Derby Class 107 DMU crosses the mainlines at Elderslie No.1 Signal Box onto the Paisley Canal lines with 14:03 Kilmacolm - Glasgow Central working. There was one Kilmacolm train a day via Gilmour Street in the last public timetable, an early morning service that stopped at Hillington West, Gilmour Street thence Houston and Crosslee as normal. There was no return working in the public timetable. Kilmacolm line services from Cart Junction and Elderslie No.2 came in on the line second from left. Kilmacolm bound trains were routed onto the line leading off to the right towards Elderslie No.2 Signal Box. Elderslie station closed in 1966 and the two island platforms were in the large gaps either side of the mainlines in the foreground. Saturday 15 November 1980. alicia hartman.

107 DMU

Six car Class 107 DMU speeds past Elderslie No.1 Signal Box on 14:00 Glasgow Central - Ayr service from Paisley Gilmour Street. The rear Set has one all blue DMBS car. The Gilmour Street lines are straight behind whilst the Paisley Canal lines veer off to the right, behind the DMUs and Signal Box. Rumoured to be the last surviving GSWR signal, a lower quadrant shunt signal was still extant at Elderslie (see cracking David Christie picture on Railcar). Whilst the rail infrastructure has changed out of all recognition post electrification, a view here is no longer possible - the road overbridge has gone, as have the Millarston high flats in the distance on the left! Saturday 15 November 1980. alicia hartman.

Derby Set 149 pulls away from Paisley Canal on 13:07 Glasgow Central - Kilmacolm as passengers cross the temporary footbridge. The operational station building and footbridge was on the Causeyside Street overbridge, behind the DMU. However, this burned down and was replaced by a Portakabin on the Glasgow bound platform (visible to the left of the leading cab) adjacent to the moribund main station building. Ironically, the building survived closure as a pub / restaurant. Saturday 15 November 1980. alicia hartman.

115 DMU

The unusual sight of a Class 115 DMU (51875 visible) in London Broad Street station on 14/07/84. It had just terminated with the Fakenham & Dereham Railway Society's "Bucks & Oxon Freighter" railtour and would then have had a lengthy ECS move to return to its home depot at London Marylebone. Alongside mixed class 501 EMU set 147 formed 75161+70161+61147 sits stabled for the weekend. Adrian Nicholls.

116 DMU

The Hertfordshire Railtours 'Highland Fling II' was primarily a loco hauled long weekend land cruise tour from London to Scotland but on Easter Sunday 30/03/86 there was a DMU tour aimed at enthusiasts rather than the wine and dine passengers. It left Edinburgh Waverley at 09.00 formed of 2x3-car DMU sets 116 389 (53825+59329+53873) and 101 346 (51467+59554+51532). The 3hr 20min mini tour was billed as going to RNAD Crombie, Longannet Power Station and the Inverkeithing north curve avoiding line. The traversal of the power station branch was as far as the signal box as the MGR loop was deemed too tight to take passenger stock without a risk of buffer locking. The branch to Crombie didn't have a photo stop but only reached Charlestown Foundry Level Crossing which was a quarter mile short of the line end at Braeside Jcn where the MOD took over. The tour then did the curve at Inverkeithing before returning to Edinburgh at lunchtime for most participants to rejoin the main t Adrian Nicholls.

117 DMU

Class 117 DMU set L427 (51365+59517+51407) is seen in the long closed Dinton station during a photo stop on the BR 'Wiltshire Wanderer' railtour organised by Basingstoke Area Manager, Gerald Daniels on 22/03/86, a short day tour making the most of the late winter daylight. Dinton station had closed on the 7th March 1966 and rationalisation of the former L&SWR mainline in 1967 from Salisbury to Exeter saw much of the route singled including here. The DMU is thus actually standing on the freight only line (the former up mainline) which was retained for just under two miles to serve RAF Chilmark in the west and RAF Baverstock and Royal Navy Dinton in the east. The military stores traffic to these three locations kept this section open until the late 1980's but this is believed to be the last tour onto the branch and it has all now closed. Adrian Nicholls.

115 DMU

A Marylebone allocated class 115 DMU set (51875 closest) is seen during a brief stop at Oxford with the Fakenham & Dereham Railway Society 'Bucks & Oxone Freighter' railtour on 14/07/84. The tour was a very civilized 8hr jaunt around the home counties starting out of London Marylebone and terminating at London Broad Street. On departure from Oxford the tour proceeded to vist the Morris Cowley branch, Didcot Milton Freight Terminal and the Brentford Town Goods branch before making its way round the North London line to Broad Street. Adrian Nicholls.

118 DMU

The Hertfordshire Railtours 'Gunnislake Goliath' railtour at Exeter St.David's formed of DEMU 1032 on 21/12/85. On the right stands the colourful class 118 DMU set no. P460 (51302 + 59469 + 51317) in all over British Telecom advertising livery which was painted unlike today's vinyl wraps. The colour scheme had been applied to raise awareness that BT was now a private company having been sold off by the Government in a share issue during November 1984. This unit was thus quite unusual when it got repainted in February 1985 as back then BR was still very much corporate blue and grey. It is seen working the 10.10 Barnstaple to Exmouth. Adrian Nicholls.
