(b) Request from C.T.C.C. for charts showing operating costs
and receipts for schemes in operation. Noted that copies of
line graph in respect of West Cumberland Service covering the years 1954
- 1956 have been sent to the B.T.C. for the information of the C.T.C.C.
with explanation that, whilst diesel traction has made a considerable
improvementin the net revenue position by reducing the variable costs, it
has, apart from one month, contributed nothing to the non-variable costs,
i.e. track signalling, etc. It is, therefore, not covering the actual costs of operation. Hope expressed that submission of this graph will not lead C.T.C. Committee to ask for similar graphs in respect of other services.
7. Conveyance of Parcels Traffic
(a) Manchester Part 2 scheme - Agreed that, as units equipped with 150 H.P. B.U.T. engines have been requested for this scheme, the two parcels vans required for the scheme be powered by 230 H.P. B.U.T. engines in order that the passenger units and parcels vans will couple together.
(b) St.Pancras scheme - Agreed that the two parcels vans will be equipped
with the same power as the passenger units for this service.
8. Design of Units
(a) B.U.T. Power Equipment - Noted that the 230 H.P. B.U.T. engines
of normal aspiration fitted to a Derby built prototype vehicle are still
under test.
(b) Coupling together of units - Noted that B.T.C. still have this
question under consideration.
(c) Seating arrangements - Noted that Derby Works can undertake the
alteration on the seating of the 19 3-car sets built by Cravens to bring
these into line with standard units, including non-smoking accomodation.
The Carriage & Wagon Engineer to prepare submission and consult with
Chief Carriage & Wagon Engineer before submitting scheme to General
Manager.
(d) Number of units in Works for repair. Noted that approximately 20
vehicles from the Birmingham Part 1 scheme are either in the Works or
awaiting Works, eight of these for fractured head stocks. Director
of Traffic Services has been asked for comments as to the cause.
