Noted that departmental submission now received and sent to L.T.E. and Western Region for agreement.
Provision of additional 20 4-car sets not yet approved, but agreed that C.M& E.E. be making preliminary arrangements for production in anticipation of approval by the Commission of 1960 building programme, and of the scheme itself.
Mr.Pearson said that the Chief Mechanical Engineer had raised the question of the additional 20 4-car sets being fitted with Rolls Royce engines. The first 15 4-car sets were already authorised for operation by B.U.T. 230 H.P. engines.
After considerable discussion it was the unanimous view of the members of the Committee that the whole of the units for the Marylebone scheme should be fitted with B.U.T. 230 H.P. engines, the reasons for the decision being :-
(i) A good opportunity for comparison would be presented by confining the Marylebone services to B.U.T engines and the St.Pancras services to Rolls Royce engines.
(ii) The capital cost of Rolls Royce equipped vehicles would be approximately £36,000 more than B.U.T., with increased annual interest and renewal costs of £2,600.
(iii) Fuel costs for Rolls Royce engines is estimated at £6,000 more per annum than B.U.T.
(iv) Two differing stocks of stores would require to be kept.
(v) Care would need to be taken to ensure the two types could be coupled together.
(vi) Very little experience had been obtained with Rolls Royce equipment and maintenance and repair estimates had been based on a very low figure.
