Built by Cravens Ltd. at Darnall (Sheffield), and numbering 302 vehicles. The body profiles were the same as Mark One coaching stock.
They were the only DMU type to be delivered to four different regions: Eastern (50 sets, 100 vehicles); London Midland (38 sets, 95 vehicles); North Eastern (31 sets, 63 vehicles); and Scottish (22 sets, 44 vehicles).
They operated in areas around Manchester, East Anglia, East & North London, Newcastle, Scotland, Cumbria and Lincolnshire.
The last vehicles were withdrawn in 1988, many saw sandite / parcels / route learning use and three examples were preserved.
