79260

May 1970
DMUs in Cohen's Cransley (Kettering) scrapyard in May 1970. Left to right are a Derby Lightweight DTCL, thought to be E79260, a Met-Camm Lightweight DTSL (thought to be 79278), DMBS, DMBS and DTSL. The their right is a MCL DTSL (blue with yellow panel) and Derby Lightweight DTSL. Above them in sidings behind are at least another four DMU vehicles. Stuart Mackay Collection.

975010

circa early 1980s
Test Car Iris, 975010, in Saxmundham station, circa early 1980s. Taken just after image 31513. Stuart Mackay Collection.

79614

circa late January 1960
Accident damaged E79614 at Cambridge diesel depot. It had struck a lorry on an occupation crossing between Worlington and Isleham on the Mildenhall branch while working the 7.34am ex Mildenhall on 15 January 1960. The photo is undated but will have been taken soon afterwards. The location of the accident is sometimes given as "Freckenham crossing" which I translate as being Smith's occupation crossing No. 61 just west of Worlington Golf Links Halt. The lorry, which was destroyed, had three occupants of which two died at the scene and the third subsequently. This may suggest the DMU struck the front, i.e. cab, end of the lorry. The Mildenhall branch had a blanket speed limit of 30mph so the DMU would not have been travelling any faster. Darren Kitson Collection.

Date unknown
A Derby Lightweight DMU in Southminster station with a Wickford service. Thought to be the same unit as image 31356, and dated between September 1956 and June 1959. Stuart Mackay Collection.

79031

circa 1956
A Derby Lightweight DMU seen in Grantham station. Closest is DMBS E79031 with Cleethorpes on the destination blind, its partner is presumably E79623. The date is unknown, but likely 1956. The pair were delivered to Lincoln depot in May 1955 but went on loan to Bradford Hammerton Street soon after, remaining there most of the rest of the year. They spent 1956 back at Lincoln, then moved on to Gorton in April 1957. Mel Smith.
