Whitby on the 24th April 1977. Nearest the camera are cars 50188 and 50162, each unit still unrefurbished at this stage, retaining all four front lights. The unit on the left appears to be 4-cars. Plenty of history in this image, with orange BR NER signage, station accessories / equipment plus all the tracks into the station terminus are still intact. With diminishing services, the station was later rationalised to just the single track on the left. Graeme Phillips Collection.

On 18 February 1984 Hertfordshire Railtours ran a railtour utilising a class 47 with eight Mk 1 carriages between London King's Cross and Darlington and a 7-car Met-Camm dmu formation (53244 + 59084 + 53149 and 53295 + 53150 and 53188 + 51219) thence to Redmire and Eastgate as "The Norseman 2". Just before 7pm, cars E53164 E59246 E53188 (two vehicles with brake vans) call at Middlesbrough with the 18:20 Saltburn - Darlington. E53164, nearest the camera, is receiving attention from a railway worker, was later preserved. The DMU visible to the left is DTS(L) no E54408 at the rear of a service to Saltburn. The use of a power-trailer formation such as this may have also been due to stock shortages, as DMUs in the north-east were generally formed as power-twins by this date, to have any hope of maintaining accelerated schedules intended for Pacers.
