Withdrawn 59539 (and 59303) at Blackpool North on Thursday 2 September 2004. They had been stored there for several years, and they were due to move that day to their new homes in preservation that. Long out-of-ticket, they had had the axles ultrasonically tested and a Fragonset Class 31 was hired to move them to a nearby 'depot' with a loading point. Unfortunately it was found that there is a tight corner on the way into the depot, with bollards on the pavement which prevented the Allely's lorry from turning. The move was aborted. The council agreed to remove the bollards, and the move was rescheduled for a later date. Paul Moxon.

Complete with a Father Christmas in the offside cab window, the retro BR green liveried three-car Class 101 DMU (101685) formed of cars 53160, 59539 & 53164 was stood in bay platform 4C at Preston on December 17th 1994. The unit was operating the Ribble Valley Rail Santa Specials between Clitheroe and Preston. The interior of the cars had been adorned with Christmas decorations and the luggage racks trimmed with tinsel. Martyn Hilbert.

Class 101 unit 101685, made up of 53160/59539/53164. on a Blaenau Ffestiniog-Llandudno working at Llandudno Junction on 1 August 1997. This unit was built by Metropolitan-Cammell and dates from 1957/1957. 101685 spent its final few years in service in green livery, as seen here, and was one of the last 5 units withdrawn from service at Newton Heath on 24 December 2003. After withdrawal it was purchased for preservation and is now operational at the NYMR. Lewis Bevan.
