This refurbished two-car DMU, with car no. 51210 leading, was pictured at Doncaster in December 1982. Evidently very fresh from a works visit, it sports a Bridlington destination blind. It was released from the Works after refurbishment on the 17th of that month. Andrew Walker.

On the one-time four track section of the LMS/GWR joint line from Birkenhead, Regional Railways Class 101 101678 (51210 & 53746) was stood in the bay at Hooton with a service to Chester on September 1st 1993. At the time, Hooton was the limit of electrification from Liverpool Central and Class 508 set 508 117 is just visible on the extreme left of this view. The extension of the live rails southwards from Hooton to Chester was underway with electric services commencing just over a month after this image was recorded, the start date being October 4th 1993. Set 356 heading out of Glasgow Central circa late 1980s. Formed of two Class 101 DMBSs and Class 110 centre car 59696, the furthest DMBS is probably the permanent DMBS 53253, the closest a temporary replacement and probably 51210. Andrew McConnell.
Set 101 356 (53253 leading 59696(cl.110) and 51210) is seen in Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh, at 17.56 on 26/6/89. The set is returning e.c.s from Cowdenbeath, having worked the 16.15 Edinburgh - Cowdenbeath, and will now form the 18.00 Edinburgh Waverley - Dunbar. Leonard Rogers.
A hybrid Haymarket 3xx set 3-car set with two Class 101 DMBSs and a Class 110 centre car. Seen circa summer 1989 about 1/2 mile east of Hartwood, heading towards Shotts. The HA castles on the power car seems to have been unique to set 356 (they were normally on the centre car) so this would make the vehicles 53253 + 59696 and presumably 51210. Andrew McConnell.

Regional Railways Metropolitan-Cammell unit 101678 (53746-51210) shortly after leaving Ashley forming an afternoon Manchester Piccadilly to Chester service on 22 July 1999. Christmas Eve 2003 saw the end of the final Class 101 Metro-Cammell DMU’s in service with First North Western, up until that time having had regular duties on the Manchester Piccadilly – Marple corridor. Following a period of storage at Shoeburyness, unit 101678 eventually found a home in preservation on the Wensleydale Railway. Long before the route of HS2 was proposed, the DMU is precisely in the location where the Phase 2 route of the line to Manchester will eventually cross! Gordon Edgar.
