A worn looking Derby Class 108 two-car DMU formed of cars 52054 & presumably 51933 (Plymouth Laira Set P955), was stood at Starcross with the 16.45 Exmouth to Paignton service on May 31st 1988. With the transfer of the Devon & Cornwall Class 142 'Skipper' fleet North, a number of first generation DMU sets went as replacements. Many of the sets were past their best with cars cobbled together from serviceable examples around the country, and were a stop-gap until Class 150/2 & Class 155 Sprinters were constructed in enough quantities to allow the ageing DMU fleet to be finally retired in the period 1989-1990. In the bright & breezy British Telecom livery and reduced to two cars, Class 118 set B460 formed of driving cars 51302 & 51317 was coupled to a blue/grey liveried Class 122 single unit whilst stood at Starcross with an Exeter St Davids to Paignton stopping service on May 29th 1986. Martyn Hilbert.

The buildings on The Strand (A379) form a backdrop to a Class 108 DMU formed of cars 53633 & 53947, departing from Starcross with the 06.58 Paignton to Exmouth service on May 26th 1992. Above the rear car is the 'Atomospheric Railway Inn', a reminder that this stretch of railway was part of Brunels atmospheric system that was in operation between 1847-1849. Martyn Hilbert.

A pair Class 122 Single Units, 55006 & 55005 were running in tandem, arriving at Starcross whilst forming the 17.07 Plymouth to Honiton all-stations service on June 1st 1990. This was the period following the migration of the Class 142 Skipper fleet to the North, with various still operational first generation DMU sets being drafted in to the West Country, prior to the arrival of Class 150/2 Sprinter units. Early morning on the Exe Estuary, as a three-car Class 101 DMU with Driving Motor Brake Second 51246 leading, was departing from Starcross with the 07.42 Exeter St Davids to Paignton service on May 28th 1990. This service called at all stations, and waited in the Down Loop at Dawlish Warren station from 07.59 to 08.04 to enable the 22.30 Glasgow Central to Plymouth service (complete with its sleeping cars) to pass by at 08.02. A Plymouth Laira allocated Class 101 formed of cars 51530 & 51181 was departing from Starcross with the 16.45 Exmouth to Paignton service on May 31st 1989. The unit was one of several first generation sets drafted into the West Country following the transfer of the Class 142 'Skipper' fleet to the North the previous year. Martyn Hilbert.

In its last few months of operation, a BRCW Class 118 Suburban three-car DMU formed of cars 51320, 59482 & 51305 (463) was stood at Starcross with a Paignton to Exeter St Davids service on June 2nd 1989. Based at Plymouth Laira Depot, the set was one of a variety of first generation DMU's that had an extended period of operation in the West Country due to the Class 142 'Skipper' fleet being transferred to the North. The first generation units lasted until sufficient Class 150/2 Sprinters became available. Martyn Hilbert.

With the blue waters of the Exe Estuary as a backdrop, a two-car Derby Lightweight DMU formed of cars 52063 & 51939, was departing from Starcross with the 15.45 Exmouth to Paignton service on May 30th 1990. The unit was one of several first generation DMU's cobbled together and sent to Plymouth Laira Depot in 1987/88 following various issues and the eventual migration of the Class 142 'Skippers' to the North. The set was one of several cobbled together first generation DMU's that had been sent to Plymouth Laira following the transfer of the 'Skipper' Class 142 fleet to the North. The set was withdrawn whilst at Laira in 1991 following the arrival of some Class 150/2 Sprinters. Martyn Hilbert.
