E50239 leads a twelve-car Met-Camm formation at Shildon 31 August 1975. These shuttles on the day of the 150th cavalcade ran to Darlington, and the November 1975 edition of The Railway Observer (p351) lists this formation as 50239 + 59087 + 59094 + 51505 / 50295 + 56075 / 51438 + 59573 + 59086 + 51506 / 56083 + 51209. Not quite as Metro Cammell 101 365 (53239 + 59053 + 53245) has brought invited guests into town as part of a publicity event for the forthcoming reopening of the Edinburgh - Bathgate line. Looking east as the Set stands in the goods yard used for motor car distribution traffic. The lifted Airdrie - Bathgate line is behind the track panels stacked to the far right. E53240 + E51458 at Stanhope on May 29, 1988, the first summer that these Sunday trains up to Stanhope. A connecting Weardale bus allowed further travel up the dale as far as Alston. It was only in the first year that first generation DMUs were used. Stanhope station is happily restored as a heritage station on the Weardale Railway. John Carter.

The peace of Battersby station is momentarily disturbed as Whitby and Middlesbrough Esk Valley services briefly meet and reverse. On 23rd August 1988, Metropolitan-Cammell Class 101 two-car units 53240 - 51467 and 51217 - 51515 form Middlesbrough and Whitby-bound services respectively. The surviving NER 1907-built water crane is a remarkable survivor. Gordon Edgar.
