A Cravens Class 105 Power Twin DMU with Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M50764 at the rear, was hurtling downgrade at Hoghton with a Colne to Preston service on May 11th 1981. At the time, Hoghton was quite a rural location, with the former goods yard in use as an ex military vehicle sales dealer. The former Hoghton station, closed in 1960, was located beyond the level crossing. Today, the goods shed has gone, replaced by a housing, and the open aspect seen in this view has vanished - trees, unchecked lineside undergrowth and housing now being located on both sides of the railway. Martyn Hilbert.

A Cravens Class 105 Power-Twin has just passed over the half-barrier level crossing at Hoghton with the 11.33 Preston to Colne on May 11th 1981. The former Goods Shed in the background was home to a dealer in ex Ministry of Defence vehicles. The area surrounding the line then had an open aspect, today the trackside is tree lined and the Goods Shed has been demolished and housing now covers the site. Martyn Hilbert.

The former main line was still double track from Farington Curve Junction to Midge Hall. The site of the lifted connection to Lostock Hall, closed in 1972 is visible in the foreground. The former up line to Ormskirk was taken out of use in 1983. Martyn Hilbert.

Bringing up the rear of a well-loaded four-car Preston to Colne service, Cravens Class 105 Power-Twin Driving Composite Lavatory car M50804 was stood at Bamber Bridge on May 13th 1981. A familiar daily sight along the East Lancashire line from the late 1960's, the then (1981) well-worn Newton Heath fleet of power-twins would shortly have started to be withdrawn from service. The local track gang had their yellow liveried BMC crew bus parked in the station car park. Martyn Hilbert.

The Ormskirk services were normally in the hands of Derby built Class 108s and the appearance of a Cravens unit was not common. Martyn Hilbert.

There appears to have been some repair work done to the timber level crossing gates at Rufford on May 13th 1981. With some of the gates in primer, Cravens Class 105 Power-Twin formed of cars M50804 & M50765 on the 17.19 Preston to Ormskirk, was awaiting the arrival of the 17.28 Ormskirk to Preston, due at 17.38, off the single line section. This was in the days when peak-hour services in the morning & evening saw services utilise the passing loop at Rufford. Martyn Hilbert.

105 DMU

15th May 1981

In the days when the Ormskirk line was still double track from Farington Curve Junction on the WCML to Midge Hall, a Newton Heath Cravens Class 105 Power-Twin, M50757 + M50815 was passing over Lodge Lane Crossing with an Ormskirk to Preston service on May 15th 1981. The foreground was the location of Moss Lane Junction , where a short double track section ran to Lostock Hall at the top of Farington Curve, once enabling trains to run direct from Liverpool and Ormskirk to East Lancashire. The junctions were taken out and the track lifted following rationalisation of the track layout/signalling in the Preston area at the time of preparation for electrification and resignalling in 1972. The well-worn former Up Line to Ormskirk formed of cast iron chairs and bullhead rail, was taken out of use in 1983 and has since been lifted. Martyn Hilbert.
