The Abbey Line (or St Albans Abbey Branch Line) runs from Watford Junction to St Albans Abbey railway station and the 6.5-mile route passes through both town and countryside. The 25kv electrified service is currently operated by London Midland class 321 units but on 7th February 1971, long before electrification, Bletchley-allocated Cravens unit No.50394 - 56146 forming a Watford to St Albans service drops a single passenger at Park Street and Frogmore station. Gordon Edgar.

With the trademark chimneys of the London Brick Company smoking in the background 56148 and 50391 are approaching their stop at Ridgmont on the Bletchley - Bedford line on 14/02/1981. Just by the chap walking onto the platform is the lever frame for the signals and crossing, this was moved here in 1934 as a staff economy measure and it allowed the signalman to open and shut the gates and attend to booking tickets, the instruments are inside the bay windowed booking hall. Geoff Dowling.

Class 105 DTCL E56414 stands on the Cambridge MPD refuelling point on the 18th September 1977 attached to an unknown Class 105 DMBS. Judging by the Kings Cross destination blind I imagine she was still allocated to Finsbury Park MPD at this time although she had moved north to Norwich by 1980. Withdrawn in November 1982 she was scrapped at Snailwell during October 1983. Bob Woolnough.

During the final weeks of services in the hands of veteran Cravens-built diesel multiple units, unit E53361-E54416 pauses at Silvertown station forming a service from Camden Road to North Woolwich on 5 March 1985. The third rail is already in place and would be energised in a few weeks ready for the ex-SR class 2-EPB EMUs to commence services from May. The original Silvertown station was opened in 1863 as part of the Eastern Counties & Thames Junction Railway. The Tate & Lyle sugar factory is on the right and the line known locally as the 'Silvertown Tramway' is still in place, providing access to the T.W.Ward scrapyard alongside the Thames Barrier. Electrification of this section was to remain for just two decades, the line being closed in December 2006. This scene has now been transformed, the remaining station and buildings being demolished in 2012 to make way for the 'Crossrail' route. Gordon Edgar.
