Prior to the Rocket 150 cavalcade at Rainhill on May 26th 1980 and with spectators getting into position for the main event, an 8-Car Class 115 Suburban DMU pairing was approaching Rainhill station with one of the many shuttle services running from Manchester Victoria. Driving Motor Brake Second M51677 in refurbished livery was bringing up the rear, the other vehicles in its four-car set still carrying Rail Blue, whilst in the leading set, three cars were in refurbished colours with one intermediate car in Rail Blue. Brand New BR Derby Works C&W Co built M51678 inside the refueling shed at Leeds Neville Hill on 25 June 1960. This set was delivered in June 1960 and became Class 115, 51678 withdrawn in December 1991 and scrapped by Gwent Demolition at Margam in August 1992. The sets were built to operate from Marylebone but were delivered before alterations had been made to Marylebone depot to handle them, so when new they temporarily worked in other areas of the country with a few working in the Yorkshire area. In late 1960 Stratford depot borrowed some Marylebone quad DMU sets to allow the replacement of the Great Eastern line electrics between Shenfield and Chelmsford to be replaced by steam and diesels while the overhead lines were converted to ac.
