A freshly converted Class 127 parcel DMU in Manchester Victoria station sometime in 1985. Stuart Parkinson.

5th March 1985

Vehicle: 51633   

Class 127 power cars M51633 and M51635 under conversion to a parcel car in Newton Heath depot on 5 March 1985. This was the first pair to be tackled, just one week later on the 12th they had been repainted and were presented to the newspaper trade in Manchester Victoria. Chris Thorp.

Vehicle: 55970   

Recently converted Class 127 parcel car 55970 (ex-51635) on Longsight depot on 20 April 1985. At least the front end is temporarily on a Mk1 coach bogies - it's own bogie(s) are probably the one(s) behind. Chris Thorp.

A Class 127 Parcels unit heads for Piccadilly, through Victoria station at 13:06 on the 27th June 1985. This working was previously done with a Class 128 propelling a GUV. Paul Moxon.

Three newly converted Class 127 parcel sets at Newton Heath depot, circa July 1985. This was the initial conversion before roller shutter doors were fitted. The closest vehicle is believed to be the former 51637, at this time numbered 55988 (which had been a Class 128 number) but would soon be renumbered as 55968. Michael Boot.

Reclaimed from the National Railway Museum, M51591 freshly repainted at Carlisle Currock after its conversion to a parcel unit in autumn 1985. The vehicle number still has to applied - it will become 55966. The roller shutter doors have not been fitted at this stage. Michael Boot.

The interior of a Class 127 DPU, thought to be 55967, in early October 1985. The newspaper vehicles had a fixed table in the front end, and a fold-down table in the rear. There were for sorting/packing newspapers. Note there are no fluorescent tubes fitted. Michael Boot.

The newly fitted roller shutter door on the drivers side of 55966, shown in the closed position. Taken at Longsight depot in early October 1985. Note the plated over bodyside windows are painted in green gloss but the plated over droplights on the doors are matt black. Michael Boot.

The cab front of the green Class 127 DPU at Longsight depot in early October 1985. Which of the two vehicles is it? 55966 only had one windscreen wiper and two overhead warning flashes, the other power car had two wipers and one flash. There are some differences from its 1983 repaint into green, at that time red triangles were painted onto the jumper sockets, and there was no black edging to the top cream lining. Michael Boot.

Vehicle: 55966   

A roller shutter door fitted to a Class 127 DPU, thought to be 55966, in early October 1985. The white brackets held timber beams to protect them from runaway BRUTEs and protect the staff of the doors were open when not in a platform. Michael Boot.
