One of the Swindon built Class 123 Inter-City DMUs is seen departing Doncaster for Manchester Piccadilly, c.1980. They joined Class 124 DMUs on services such as this from the late 1970s, working until mass withdrawal of both classes in May 1984, replaced by Class 31/4s. Graeme Phillips Collection.
A Class 108 DMU is seen calling at Askam, Cumbria, around 1980, with a service that is probably heading for Millom. Having the large headcode box, the front vehicle at least is likely to be allocated to Chester or a Manchester depot, as opposed to Carlisle Kingmoor (KD), whilst the rear set appears to be Class 105, another type not allocated to KD. A class 100 D.M.U. at New Mills Central, most probably 1980 or 1981. Arnie Furniss adds - That's the tail lamp from the inbound working. The driver has changed ends in the tunnel that was the sole remnant of the Hayfield branch and has brought the train into the platform for the return working to Manchester. The guard will now place the tail lamp at the other end as it's easier than doing it in the tunnel! Curly42.
