The Chairman stated that, following a complaint from a Member of Parliament, the General Manager had informed the Commission that he would arrange for further enquiries to be made to see if the request for first class non-smoking accomodation in 2-car sets could be met.
After a full discussion it was agreed that the first class accomodation is too small to allow it to be divided into smoking and non-smoking sections. The only solution would be to convert a portion of the second class accomodation in the motor open brake to first class and provide in each eight non-smoking seats and would have the effect of providing a disproportionate amount of first class accomodation. Even with the present proportions, first class accomodation is in most cases lighly loaded, whilst the second class is almost fully occupied and it was considered that no change should be made in the present allocation.
Revised schedule of allocation attached as Appendix "B".
Noted that the question of a subsidy for bus services was being dealt with by Mr. Blee.
