In early 1974 two DMBSs (E51115/6, withdrawn from Norwich in October 1972) were transferred to departmental stock as DB975348/9. The pair were allocated to Neville Hill for route learning and special duties[1]. Carrying their new numbers they were noted at Leeds on 21 March 1974 still with East Anglia Paytrain maps displayed inside[2], and the same day hauling the District Engineer's inspection which it ran around at Ilkley[3].
DB975348 would be returned to passenger stock at Norwich in March 1976 and replaced by E56101 (also a Norwich vehicle) becoming DB975539 and paired with DB975349.
DB 975349 / 539 would at some point be transferred to York depot where it earned the nickname of the 'York Saloon'. They were used for route learning and line inspections. They were withdrawn in 1993, outlasting the last passenger service vehicles and had spent more time in departmental than passenger use.
DB 975664 / 975637 were known as the 'Stourton Saloon' (they were based mainly at Stourton Sidings in Leeds). Latterly they carried the then Provincial 'Sprinter' style livery, as pictured in Lincoln Central during August 1986, Graeme Phillips Collection.
Withdrawn from Lonsight in July 1983 DTC M56106 became ADB977191 as part of the Crewe Works test train (seen here in use). By March 1987 it was out of use and stored at Crewe Basford Hall Yard until 2000 before it was finally moved for disposal.
