Class 104 BRCW 2-car DMU 50598 + 56187 arrived at New Mills Central on 18-9-82. On Tour With the Class 13 Army.
This was the first class 104 I photographed in the West Midlands but that doesn't really excuse the poor job I made of composing the picture. I'm not a fan of pictures without at least some background and the only bit of identity is a small part of Leamington Spa's signalbox. The train is an Accrington to Portsmouth footex on 8 October 1984 formed of BX 488 with cars M53598, M59144 and M53542 running through the station on the up main line. I should love to see any photographs taken of this working somewhere in the Basingstoke area as it would have been quite a rarity on the LSWR. Peter Tandy.
Class 104 DMU with car 53598 leading at New Mills Newtown for Buxton on 27-10-84. On Tour With the Class 13 Army.
Buxton based BRC&W class 104 3 car dmu M53598, M59144, M53542, is seen at Bankend between Furness Vale and New Mills Newtown, whilst working a Buxton-Manchester Piccadilly service. 20th January 1985 Andrew J Crowther.

BRCW Class 104 DMBS 53598 is the trailing power car in mixed Set 455 seen here leaving Prestwick station in August 1986. The wires are in place for the Ayrshire electrification which would go live the following month. The centre car is a Metro-Cammel vehicle (59090). A typically mixed set in the final fling of the DMU in Scotland. Andrew McConnell.
Indian summer of the DMU in Ayrshire. Set 455 (presumably 53598 + 59090 + 53210) works with a Class 120 set at Ayr station in September 1986. Andrew McConnell.
Kilwinning on the afternoon of 15/9/86 with a mixed cl.101/104 set (53210/59090/53598) leaving on the 16.09 to Glasgow (15.45 ex-Ayr). Note the mix of liveries on this Ayr set, which, typically for this time, is a real mish-mash of whatever the depot could cobble together. So, the leading DMBS in blue and grey is recently arrived from Hull, the class 101 trailer is in Strathclyde colours and the class 104 DMBS at the rear, a Newton Heath cast-off, is in plain blue. Leonard Rogers.
Class 104 53598 with two Class 120 sets (one is 522) on their way to Snailwell. Seen at 09:05 on Saturday 14th November 1987 at March. Colin Brooks.
Night maintenance in Neville Hill depot. A fitter adjusts the tappets on a Leyland 680 engine. Note the lamp socket on the engine start/stop controls being used. The worksplate on the solebar tells us this is a BRC&W vehicle from lot 30404 - a DMBS from a batch of five driving trailer sets built for the North Eastern Region. Of the five DMBSs only two were allocated to the depot in this era: 50594 and 50598. This image appeared on the rear cover of the 17th edition of the British Transport Commission's Transport Age magazine dated April 1961. British Railways.

Having just left Middlewood station on the 1in60 climb to Disley, Buxton based BRC&W class 104 dmu (M53542, M59144, M53598) emerges from the short Middlewood Tunnel which takes the railway underneath the Macclesfield Canal. 9th March 1985. Andrew J Crowther.
Buxton based BRC&W class 104 3 car dmu BX488 (M53598, M59144, M53542) in Buxton station on 6th May 1985. Andrew J Crowther.
With the Buxton tracks having been temporary slewed, two Buxton allocated BRC&W class 104 dmu's are about to pass each other, working the Manchester Piccadilly - Buxton services on 30th November 1985. The cord track bed is now in place it wont be long before the track on the cord is in place as well, providing a link between the old Midland Rly that crosses the bridge and the L&NW Rly, an idea that was first proposed in 1902, the cord opened for traffic on the 12th May 1986. BX488 presumably contains 53542 59144 53598. Andrew J Crowther.
Class101 DMBS 53210 is seen having just arrived on the Ayrshire side of Glasgow Central Station on the 29th July 1986. Formally allocated to Norwich MPD she still carries her 86 depot number at the top of her centre cab window. Class 101 TSL 59090 forms the centre car in Strathclyde red and black livery with Class 104 53598 bringing up the rear. Together they formed Scottish Region Set No. 104455. All had been scrapped by August 1989 Bob Woolnough.
