Class 108 DMU at Preston

6th February 1988

Derby built Class 108 Driving Motor Brake Second M53934 was the filling in a BRCW Class 104 sandwich in platform 1 at Preston station on February 6th 1988. M53934 was coupled to Class 104 Driving Motor Second Lavatory (DMSL) M53501 awaiting departure to Blackpool South, whilst to the rear Class 104 DMSL M53507 was the leading car with a service to Blackpool North. Having climbed the gradient from Farington Curve Junction on the WCML, a two-car Class 104/108 hybrid DMU formed of cars M53501 & M53934 was passing Lodge Lane Crossing on Farington Moss with a lunchtime Preston to Ormskirk service on January 7th 1988. In the foreground is the part dismantled former Up Line that was taken out of use in 1983, prior to which double track had been retained from Farington Curve Junction to Midge Hall. The DMU is passing through the site of the one-time Moss Lane Junction, where until 1972 there was a direct link from the Ormskirk route that connected with the East Lancashire line at the top of Farington Curve. At 8.28pm towards the end of a fine Summer evening with the sun setting in the West, an eight-car DMU forming a Carlisle to Preston 'Dalesrail' service was stood at Bamber Bridge on August 7th 1988. With the rear of the train standing on the level crossing, the driver was looking back along the train. The formation was M54268 & M53934, M53334 & M51206, M53492 & M53439, M53948 & M53944.
