During the morning of 10th March 1979 a Cravens class 105 unit No.E56139-E50371 eases into March station forming a Peterborough to Cambridge service. How the railway has changed when you look at the platform; Nestle chocolate vending machines, a porter's trolley, even a porter coming out of his office, not to mention flares and long hair. I wonder if that DMU was a 'cop' for the young enthusiast? The favourite vantage point, the road overbridge for looking into Whitemoor Yard, can be seen between the station chimneys. There is also some spoil offloading activity from rail wagons going on adjacent to the GN&GE Joint line platform. Happy days! Gordon Edgar.

On a very dark January 26th 1983, Metro-Cammell power twin E50280 + E50275 loads up at March whilst working the 10.38 Doncaster - Cambridge. It was unusual to see a power twin set in East Anglia and this one was based at Leeds Neville Hill depot. Two months earlier these services had been diverted via Peterborough following closure of the joint line from March to Spalding. Gerard Fletcher.

On Saturday August 2nd 1980, the 15.53 Cambridge - Peterborough service is formed of Cambridge allocated Met-Cam E51225 + E56373 when seen at March West Jn. These sets had been refurbished and were normally found on the Cambridge - Royston or Bishop's Stortford shuttles with only occasional forays elsewhere. Gerard Fletcher.
Vehicle: 50590 Set: 86
This is set 86 comprising E50590, E59221 and at the rear out of frame E50583. The train is the 17.23 Peterborough - Norwich of Friday 28th March 1980 which was pretty much an all stations affair I seem to recall. It is seen arriving at a rather wet March station. Gerard Fletcher.

The low winter sun highlights the puddles at March as the 10.26 Doncaster - Cambridge service pulls in off the joint line from Spalding. Cravens Class 105 E56454 + E51284 was one of nine sets of its type allocated to Lincoln depot often used on these long distance stopping trains. Scan of a print taken with a pocket camera. 3rd December 1980. Gerard Fletcher.
Vehicle: 50578 Set: 80
Three car BRCW dmu sets were allocated to Norwich for the first time in late 1975. All except one came from Hull Botanic Gardens and were replacements for Metro-Cammell sets which had been gathered by Norwich from 1968 onwards. The Class 104 sets were in pretty poor nick, but here's one which has had some TLC at Doncaster Works. Photographed on April 25th 1980 whilst working the 13.36 Peterborough - Cambridge service, E50578 ended up being part of the last three car set at Norwich. Most of them left in 1980, but this one lasted until February 1981 when it went to Stratford. Refurbished Metro-Cammell triples were their replacements. The BRCW units were numbered 80 - 88 and the refurbished Cammells commenced with set 90. Gerard Fletcher.

E50346 at March on a very damp August 17th 1979 in ex works condition with domino style headcode display. After this hasty (and somewhat blurred) photo had been taken, I went down to the platform where further scrutiny revealed a paint date of 29/7/79. It was paired here with a rather less sparkling Cravens trailer, E56114, they were working the 17.10 Cambridge to Peterborough service. Gerard Fletcher.

Two trainspotters, cameras at the ready, prepare to snap for posterity the 14.30 Cambridge - Lincoln Central dmu, formed of Lincoln based Derby Heavyweight set E56028 (nearest the camera) trailing E50023, as it departs from March on a gloomy Saturday November 27th 1982 - the final day of services on the March - Spalding section. The 12.38 Doncaster - Cambridge via the GN/GE joint line leaves March on 15th May 1982 formed of Cravens Class 105 set no. 53 E51277 + E56463. On the rear is Lincoln based Class 114 unit E50016 + E56018 which was in a hybrid livery of old and new refurbished paint schemes. E51277 was to last another three years being withdrawn in May 1985. Gerard Fletcher.
Vehicle: 50626
The northbound lunchtime service over the joint line, the the 13.55 Cambridge - Doncaster is seen arriving at March on 15th May 1982 formed of a Derby Works 3 car dmu E50626 + E59384 + E50636 allocated to Leeds Neville Hill. The set was refurbished later in 1982. It was not uncommon to see sets from Neville Hill and even South Gosforth on the joint line trains, although most of the time the Derby Heavyweight Class 114s and Cravens Class 105 sets held sway. In the background behind the Shenfield units can be seen withdrawn LMR DMUs including a Class 104 centre car and a Cravens. Gerard Fletcher.
