An unusual image showing a Class 101 DTCL separated from its set and being hauled on the rear of a rake of empty stock towards Newcastle. It is one of the "batch 2E" trailer cars which narrows it down to the 56050-061 batch, approximately half of these were allocated to South Gosforth depot during the "green with half yellow panel" era, which leads to speculation that the train's destination may be that depot? Other stock in the formation includes two Southern PMV vehicles and two BR Mark 1 coaches. The location appears to be Henwick Hall on the former East Coast Main Line south of Selby, the date is unknown. Chris Moxon Collection.

A class 37 is collecting a failed Class 123 unit (thought to be L711 / 52091) from the wall siding at Hereford in August 1976. These units seemed to be on their last legs, and I was surprised when they went to the Eastern Region, rather than the scrapyard...! John Crooks.

For many years it was common for Glasgow Works to despatch overhauled DMU vehicles to Edinburgh in the consist of the daily parcels train from nearby Sighthill parcels depot. On 27th December 1980 there seems to have been a mistake and one of Hamilton depot’s class 107 sets (59782 + 52021 visible) arrived. I can only assume that 40161 was being used to return it to the correct destination, seen leaving Haymarket station. Possibly one of the last workings for 40161 as it was withdrawn 2 days later. Murray Liston.

A joint BR/Steamport Museum open day at Southport on the 11th September 1982, featured a shuttle service between Southport Station and the Museum premises, hauled by Birkenhead allocated Class 03, 03189 with a 2-car Class 108 dmu. The ensemble is seen from the Windsor Road Footbridge heading from BR metals into the Steamport premises. Martyn Hilbert.
A joint BR/Steamport Open Day at Southport on September 11th 1982, saw a connecting service between Southport Station and the former Engine Shed in Derby Road, operated by Birkenhead based 03189 with Class 108 DMU M52051/M51936 providing the passenger accomodation. With former West Lancashire Railway land as a backdrop, 03189 propels one of the frequent shuttles away from the Steamport Museum and was about to pass under Windsor Road Footbridge. The Museum closed in 1999 and the site is now a retail park. The land above the 03 was the former route to the original West Lancashire Railway terminus station at Derby Road, used by services of the independent company when the line opened in 1883 from Preston until it was absorbed by the L&Y in 1897, the station being closed to passenger trains in 1901 following remodelling at Chapel Street. The WLR station was then used for goods traffic until 1973. Martyn Hilbert.

On 27 August 1983 Class 47 no 47342 is seen at Llandudno having dragged a Class 101/108 dmu formation. I had this down as a Blythe Bridge-Llandudno "additional" service, but the "Class 47 list" website says that the train was an 09.22 Stoke-Llandudno relief. I travelled on this train from Llandudno Junction, but I have no idea where the 47 was attached. Lewis Bevan.
Class 47 no 47342 hauls DMU cars 51917/54496/54058/53206 through Llandudno Junction on 27 August 1983. This was a return ecs working from an incoming additional service from Blythe Bridge to Llandudno, which I had travelled in from Llandudno Junction. I'm not sure whether 47342 had hauled the dmus from Blythe Bridge, or (as seems more likely) it had come on following a failure of one or both of the 2-car units. Lewis Bevan.

From the kitchen window of my then nearby home on a date I can't find in my notebooks, but probably in 1985, I saw 31 426 arrive at Stratford-upon-Avon with the Derby Lightweight Ultrasonic Test Train (TDB975007/975008) in tow. It went into the Down Goods Loop where the class 31 was detached, ran along the up main line to the crossover before being coupled to 6Z08 and prepared to leave. After a brake test carried out I took this picture as 6Z08 left the loop to use the crossover (which the signalman maintained wasn't fit to use!) and joined the up main line towards Bearley Junction. Peter Tandy.

I think the DMU on this Swansea to Shrewsbury service had failed en-route, and it is seen here in Shrewsbury after arriving behind 25 265 on the 24th of May 1986. A comment by Adrian Nicolls (on flickr): "Looking at the clock which appears to show 14.30 and based on your caption comment. Its the 09.38 ex Swansea due Shrewsbury at 13.49 nothing ties in off the Cambrian line so looks very likely for the Central Wales line train. Canton depot had 7 two-car Met-Cam sets for west Wales workings back then numbered C801 - C807." The KDH Archive.

This picture was taken at Great Bridge on 17 June 1987 in weather more suitable for November. There was nothing pleasant in any respect about the area around Great Bridge even though I do like the industrial scenery, but in these conditions it was really nasty. 47564 is seen here dragging three Class 101 DMU vehicles (looks like three brakes) to Gloucester past the semaphore signal controlled by Eagle Crossing box. There is some evidence of activity in the adjacent yard, but at this time it was quite rare to see any movement here. Peter Tandy.

This formation had been hauled around for at least a couple of days, so had not just failed. Acceleration with a Class 47 would have been brisk. Locomotive haulage of local services in the north-east were not uncommon through the 1980s, due to shortages of available DMUs, including failures of the then new Class 143 Pacers later in the decade. An influx of former Western Region Class 142s plus replacement of the troublesome SCG mechanical gearboxes with Voith hydraulic transmissions, from 1988, saw the eventual withdrawal of the last remaining Class 101s from the area in September 1989, although locomotive haulage of rakes of three coaches continued until 1990. Run in conjunction with Worcester Rail Day, 20066/20138 were photographed at Hereford on 2 May 1993 on one of a series of "mini-tours" which used DMU sets T404 + T412 as the hauled stock. They had set off from Birmingham New St, and, after visiting the Open Day at Worcester, tour participants had a choice from a return trip to Gloucester, then two return trips to Hereford, before the return to Birmingham. Lewis Bevan.
Class 37 no. 37114 "City of Worcester" arrives back at Shrub Hill with a shuttle service from Henwick on 2 May 1993. The shuttle was being run in conjunction with the Open Day being held at Worcester on that day and was topped and tailed with GWR "Castle" Class no. 5029 "Nunney Castle". 3 of the 4 vehicles making up the coaching stock of this train was chocolate and cream-liveried dmu set 117305. This set consisted of 51368/59520/51410. Lewis Bevan.
On 2 May 1993 Pathfinder ran a mini-railtour in connection with an open day at Worcester using 20138+20066. The 2 locos were, unusually, hauling two 4-car DMUs, T404 (51853+59735+59604+53919) + T412 (51860+59591+59446+53116) which ran from Birmingham New Street to Worcester via the Lickey incline, and then on to Hereford and back via Great Malvern. The first of four shots was taken as train slowed for the junction at Stoke Prior before it turned onto the single line to Droitwich and Worcester. Peter Tandy.

The second of four shots was taken after a quick drive down to Ashchurch with a couple of minutes to spare. It is interesting to note that the trees on the up side of the line were still quite small in 1993. They subsequently grew very tall and were felled in 2004. Peter Tandy.

There was plenty of time to run over to Stoke Edith, on the Worcester - Hereford line, to obtain the third of four shots. The sun still co-operated for this pleasantly rural view. Peter Tandy.

This was the final shot of four of the tour - no longer in full sun which infuriated some of the more vocal enthusiasts - but still quite an acceptable shot. It is the classic view at Stoke Edith which I expect is now so overgrown as to be unusable. Peter Tandy.

On the evening of 6 August 2000 four Class 101 sets are hauled past Polmadie depot by 37 219 and 37 109 on their way to a new home at Longsight depot. Stuart Mackay.
The class 101 DMMU known as Iris II (977693 + 977694) was taken from Derby to Bishops Lydeard for a new live in preservation on Tuesday 18 March 2008. The power provided was 31459 which, in its black livery, provided a nice contrast to the two different yellows of the unit. I wanted to be in the Evesham or Pershore area at some point during the day so just went to the nearest point to my home where a reasonably wide view could be obtained so as to show all 3 vehicles. Here is 5Z08 passing Croome Perry wood after being in the loop at Abbotswood for some time to allow the passage of a class 170 on a Cardiff service and an Arriva Voyager on a Cross Country train. I came very close to being bowled out by a northbound Arriva-liveried 170 105 which was outside the frame by no more than a few inches. Peter Tandy.
A schedule appeared on RTT for Wednesday 9 My 2019 showing that a Leicester to Long Marston light engine move followed by a class 5 train to Eastleigh would run on Wednesday 8 May 2019, I saw from a friend's message that it was to be 57305 and 47813 topping and tailing a class 117 DMU. I grabbed a camera bag and headed out. As the departure time from Long Marston was 12.15 and it was already 11.55 I went straight to Honeybourne and after arriving on the road bridge saw that 5Q86 was sitting at the staff hut rather than at the signal in the station as is more usual. It wasn't long before the branch signal was cleared and 57303 led the train towards the main line and off to Worcester for a reversal. The vehicles were from the former Chiltern water jet train, 977987 and 977988. The unit's brakes were not operational and a through pipe between the locomotives was in use; on the side not visible here. Peter Tandy.
