Swindon Inter-City DMUs, then Cross-Country DMUs (mainly the Swindon type), were used on this route. Occassionaly other types such as Class 116s were noted.
The DMUs took over on 17 June 1957 running from Birmingham Snow Hill via Stratford-upon-Avon to Cardiff and Swansea. From the summer 1958 timetable additional services were added to Cardiff via Hereford, and some of the Swansea services were extended to Carmarthen.

On the first day of the Birmingham Snow Hill - South Wales diesel service - Monday 17th June 1957 - W79087 is at the head of the 12.25pm to Cardiff General (via Stratford-upon-Avon). As the clock shows the departure is delayed as had to back out from platform 12 where it was behind another 3-car set that may have failed, or it was just at the wrong end of an incoming set. Swindon Cross-Country DMBC W50701 gets some attention at Birmingham Snow Hill on March 15, 1958. It will depart on the 3:40pm to Swansea (Swansea was Saturdays only, other days it just went to Cardiff) via Stratford-upon-Avon. The other set was the 12.10pm ex-Cardiff. Michael Mensing.

The 5.5pm Birmingham Snow Hill - Swansea High Street approaches Acocks Green on 29th March 1958. Formed of two three-car Swindon Inter-City sets, the rear containing a buffet car. The closest power car in the second set - the fourth vehicle - is back to front as the van was adjacent to the van on these sets. Michael Mensing.

A Derby suburban triple DMU seen in Handsworth & Smethwick station looking south east towards Snow Hill. Cardiff can just be seen on the destination blind, this is probably one of two sets from the 508xx series transferred from Cathays to Tyseley circa late 1960 which had they two digit headcode panel rather than the four marker lamp arrangement that the other Tyseley sets did.
