This isn't the greatest shot of Smethwick West signal box but I was keen to have a few pictures of trains passing it as even in 1986 there were reports of its closure. This finally happened in 1990 when the line was resignalled. Here is my only picture of a DMU passing the box with T621 (presumably 53837 + 59604 + 53919) passing by on a Birmingham New Street to Great Malvern service on 29 August 1986. I once spoke to a relief signalman who worked the box on occasions and was told that the frame interlocking area had a large population of rats in residence and that the relatively isolated location made it a target for vandals from the surrounding area. Few signalmen mourned its passing. Peter Tandy.
Here is a shot of a class 116 DMU about to enter Droitwich Spa station with a Birmingham new Street to Great Malvern service on 18 April 1987. Although the semaphore signals and their controlling signal box survive in 2015 much else, including the coal yard, the Ruston 0-4-0 shunter and the up loop have disappeared. Peter Tandy.
Tyseley based T408 (presumably 53114 + 59592 + 59448 + 51859) approaches Cradley Heath station on 2 July 1988 working the 14.32 Birmingham New Street-Great Malvern. Lewis Bevan.
53073 is at the rear of set T328 with 59760 + 53132 leaving Kidderminster, on the 09:32 Birmingham New Street - Great Malvern, 28/4/90. Hamish Stevenson.
Departing Droitwich Spa on 28 September 1990 is Tyseley-based set T407 with the 11.03 Great Malvern-Birmingham New Street. Class 115 DMBS 51858 was the leading car, the others are presumably 59594 + 59442 + 53916. Lewis Bevan.
Droitwich Spa on 28 September 1990 - Tyseley-based set TS412 is approaching working the 12.00 Birmingham New Street-Great Malvern. I recorded the power cars as 53116 (leading) and 51867. Lewis Bevan.
Class 108 set T066 (51943 and presumably 51568) arrives into Birmingham New Street with what is thought to be the 09:59 from Great Malvern on 15 December 1990. Robert Thomas.
230391 T326 53881 + 59668 + 53822 arrive at Droitwich Spa, bound for Great Malvern Jason Hall.
Class 118 DMS no. 51331 leading BRCW 3-car suburban set T318 correctly formed with class 118 vehicles 59483 & 51316. The photo was taken peering round an inconveniently placed train of Brute trolleys on the platform! They were often useful for sitting on though. The unit is seen ready to leave with a service for Great Malvern on 26/Jul/1991. Robert Chilton.
