In all, 57 (of the 98 built) Class 111 vehicles would be refurbished. All were done at Doncaster Works between July 1976 and April 1983. Some of the unpowered vehicles were working with Class 101 power cars at the time.
Until May 1979, the first 17 vehicle, the white/blue stripe "refurbished" livery was applied, after that blue/grey was used.
The first vehicle treated — DMBS 50134 — kept its four marker lamps on the cab front. Later vehicles would have the front ends standardised leaving just two lamps, on the batch two vehicles this meant plating over the two-character route indicator and on the batch three vehicles the four-character headcode was removed. The latter were still identifiable by the lowered destination blind.
