Three DMBS vehicles saw use on sandite / route learning duties after withdrawal from passenger use in November 1987. Three Class 101 DMBSs were also converted at the same time, and these conversions were notable as they were the first power cars converted for sandite use, all previous vehicles were driver trailers and probably loco hauled. They were also the first Eastern Region Sandite DMUs, and the first sandite DMU conversions to have a dual purpose.
977538 would be paired with 977537 (ex-50320), and both pairs would be based at Neville Hill.
Their time in their new role was very limited, they were soon replaced by Class 110s, and all three were disposed of at Mayer Newman, Snailwell in 1989. The image shows 977538 - formerly 53134 there on May 31, 1989. Surface Stock.
