A more powerful variation of the Metropolitan Cammell Class 101/2s having Rolls-Royce 180hp engines rather than the BUT 150hp type.
Four power / trailer sets were delivered to the LMR Manchester area, followed by ten 3-car sets for the NER at Bradford, and a further ten 3-car/2-car sets for the NER, this last batch easily identifiable by a four-character headcode box.
The unpowered vehicles could also be found working with Class 101/2 power cars, particularly the buffet cars. These were ordered as regular centre cars, the order was changed late on and the vehicles delivered independently, yet they remained considered by BR as Class 111s.
In the 1980s most power cars had one engine removed as a maintenance / cost saving measure and formed into power twins. With 360hp they were still more powerful than a conventional power / trailer set.
All power cars were withdrawn by 1989, a driver trailer survived into the 2000s. Just one buffet car was preserved.
