Class 104 DMU at Stockport

31st July 1975

Some serious track maintenance being examined by all and sundry as Buxton DMUs are seen crossing on Stockport viaduct July 31, 1975. On the left, M50483, M59139 & M50431 (nearest) head toward Piccadilly whilst on the right M50423 (nearest), M59135 & M50427 are bound for Whaley Bridge as they approach the platform at Stockport. A Class 104 power twin on Longsight depot on 22 April 1979. A Buxton set number can just be seen in the left cab window, it seems to read BN462 which would make the DMBS M50431. Brian Daniels.

Class 104 DMU at Scarborough

23rd July 1983

A freshly painted Class 104 (with roof vents removed) leads a six-car DMU formation past Falsgrave signal box into Scarborough on Saturday 23 July 1983. The vehicles are M53431 + M59137 + M53496 / M53424 + M59207 + M53434. Note the 1Z11 in the centre cab window, this is thought to be a BR merrymaker from Buxton. Brian Daniels.

On 2nd March 1986 a white roofed Buxton based BRC&W class 104 dmu BX484 (M53431, M59137, M53496) has just terminated at Disley, because of Sunday engineering works further down the line, passengers will now cross over and board the GMT "standard" waiting on the A6 to take them to Hazel Grove. The line between Disley and Hazel Grove was closed every Sunday around this time for the construction of the Hazel Grove Cord. Andrew J Crowther.

Class 104 DMU at Croft Sidings, Preston

3rd May 1987

Complete with a discoloured white cab roof, two-car BRCW Class 104 DMU, formed of Driving Motor Brake Second M53431 & Driving Motor Lavatory Second M53512 was stabled between duties in Croft Street Sidings adjacent to Preston Power Box on May 3rd 1987. The well-worn unit was having an extended period of operation due to the sidelining of the then ailing almost new Class 142 Pacer fleet. The unit would become a spare set at Chester Depot in November 1989 due its poor condition until it was officially withdrawn in June 1990, as new Class 150/2 Sprinters began to appear in quantity from BREL York. A White roofed Buxton based BRC&W class 104 dmu BX484 (M53496, M59137, M53431) has terminated at Disley on 2nd March 1986 because of Sunday engineering works further down the line and is crossing back over to work the return service to Buxton. The line between Disley and Hazel Grove was closed every Sunday around this time for the construction of the Hazel Grove Cord. In it's last years Disley was a "Peak" hour only box, with i think 1 maybe 2 Disley peak hour expresses from Manchester Piccadilly terminating here, they were probably the only passenger trains scheduled not to stop at Stockport. A two-car BRCW Class 104 DMU formed of cars M53512 & M53431 (N662) was stood at the North end of platform 6 at Preston ready to work ECS back to its home depot at Newton Heath on the evening of April 1st 1989. The cars had been long-term residents of Newton Heath, but four months after this image was recorded, the set was transferred to Chester Depot and given the set number CH606.
