A Class 114 DMU with DTCL E56043 closest (the DMBS is possibly E50001) in Sheffield station, date unknown. Paul Redmond.
A refurbished Class 114 DMU in Sheffield station with a Lincoln service in December 1978. DTCL E56043 is closest, while on the opposite platform is Class 123 E52102. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Having travelled down the 1375ft long Pier from New Holland Pier Head, A Class 114 2-Car DMU formed of E56043 & E50001 in refurbished livery, stands at New Holland Town with a service to Cleethorpes on Sunday 28th September 1980. With the opening of the Humber Suspension Bridge in June 1981, and the subsequent withdrawal of the ferry service from New Holland Pier to Hull, the stations and the pier were all closed on June 24th 1981. Martyn Hilbert.
In refurbished livery, A Class 114 2-Car DMU, formed of cars E50001 & E56043, waits to depart from a run-down looking New Holland Pier with a service to Cleethorpes on Sunday 28th September 1980. The linkspan connecting the station to the ferry landing stage can be seen to the right of the station building. A Morris Minor and a Mark 3 Ford Cortina are parked behind the buffer stops. In this period only one track was in situ at this end of the Pier. Martyn Hilbert.
Despite succumbing to closure in September 1961, the platforms, station buildings and even the waiting shelter canopy were still intact at Cowbit on 24th October 1980, some two years before the line from March to Spalding closed completely. This Lincoln based Derby Heavyweight Class 114 DMU formed of cars E56043 & E50001 was working the 13.50 Cambridge - Doncaster local service, seen heading for its next stop at Spalding. In the early 1970s, the passenger service on the joint line was largely long distance loco hauled services, notably the Yarmouth - York, Newcastle - Norwich and Harwich - Manchester 'Boat Train' all used this route. In around 1974 DMUs took over being mainly supplied by Norwich and Lincoln depots, but occasionally Tyneside and Calder Valley sets would make appearances. Gerard Fletcher.
A Class 114 Derby Heavyweight DMU arrived Platform 5 at Cambridge August 1987. The DTS has oval buffers and still has two windscreen wipers, many only had one by this period. That means it is probably 54043. On Tour With The Class 13 Army.
Class 114 DMU set T234 (presumably 54043 + 53044) departing St Andrews Road for Severn Beach on 17 November 1987. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Class 114 DMU set formation no. T234 (presumably 54043 + 53044) is seen calling at Spondon, Derbyshire, with a Birmingham-Lincoln service, on Tuesday 20/06/1989. Graeme Phillips Collection.
Class 114 set T024 (with presumably 54043 closest) is seen in Leamington Spa on the 9th January 1991. On the left is 47 581. Mike Cooper.
With its distinctive lowered destination indicated E50001 leads a Class 114 DMU in Sheffield station, date unknown. The DTCL is possibly E56043. Paul Redmond.
In refurbished livery, Class 114 two-car DMU formed of E50001 & E56043 was stood at a run-down looking New Holland Town with a service from New Holland Pier to Cleethorpes on Sunday September 28th 1980. The station here and the 1,375 Yard Pier and the station at the Pier Head (and the connecting ferry service across the River Humber to Hull) was closed some nine months after this image was recorded. The last day of service was June 1st 1981, commensurate with the opening of the Humber Suspension Bridge. This place was in a time-warp, with BR Eastern Region blue enamel signage and mechanical signalling including some lower quadrants. This was my one and only visit to New Holland Pier, and my regret is that I did not have a ride on the DMU, photograph the Ferry, or by a ticket as a souvenir. Martyn Hilbert.
A refurbished Class 114 DMU formed of cars E56043 & E50001 arrives at New Holland Town with a service from Cleethorpes to New Holland Pier on September 28th 1980. There is much of interest in this view, including a pair of lower quadrant signals, the North to West curve towards Barton-On-Humber, Barrow Road Signal box and the level crossing giving vehicular access to the Pier and the ferry service across the Humber to Hull. Martyn Hilbert.
Class 114 Derby Heavyweight 2-Car DMU formed of cars E50001 & E56043 (E50001 was the first built, emerging from Derby in 1956), departs from New Holland Pier and runs along the 1,375 yard structure towards its next stop at New Holland Town on September 28th 1980. There is a air of dereliction all around, the pier closed to passenger trains following the opening of the Humber Suspension Bridge in June 1981. Martyn Hilbert.
E53044 & E54043 at Derby on 12/05/87. Steve Jones.
Class 114 E53044 + E54043 pass through Queen Adelaide with the 16.50 Peterborough to Cambridge, 14.08.87. Nicholas Youngman.
Class 114 vehicles 53044 + 54043 were reallocated from Lincoln to Tyseley (their first move since new) at the start of October 1987 becoming set T234. Here the set is seen a few weeks later on 17 November in Bristol Temple Meads and was noted as ready to work the 12:53 to Severn Beach. Stuart Mackay Collection.
By April 1990 class 114 units had largely taken over local trains between Stratford-upon-Avon and Leamington Spa. This is T024 (53044 + 54043) in platform 2 at Stratford on 30 April with the 17.12 departure with a couple of tourists appearing to be asking if this was their service. The people on the platform were waiting for the 17.30 train to Birmingham which was about to arrive in platform 1. Peter Tandy.
A rather indistinct shot from a passing train of cl.114 nos.53044/54043 at Leamington on 5/7/90. Despite what the platform clock says, the time was ca. 15.50 and the unit may have formed an incoming service from either Hatton or Stratford-upon-Avon. This was during the period of four years or so at the end of the class's life when the remaining units were based at Tyseley (apart from a few which had gone into parcels service). They moved here in 1987 after a thirty-year stint based at Lincoln, their only home up to that point. Leonard Rogers.
Class 114 T024 (53044 + 54043) was in the soon to be lifted Cold Store Siding alongside platform 3 at Stratford-upon-Avon on 24 November 1990. It was unusual to see a DMU here on a Sunday at that date as there was no Sunday service to the station then, so I assume that it had failed and was waiting either for a fitter to arrive the next day or to be dragged back to Tyseley. Class 47 47827 was just arriving to take out the VSOE dining train with 47807 which had come into the station earlier. Peter Tandy.
