Following a very dull Autumn day, a gash in the cloud cover as the sun was setting provided some dramatic lighting as Class 101 two-car set 101682 (53256 & 51505) was stood at Romiley with the 16.24 Manchester Piccadilly to Sheffield service on October 14th 2000. Although in BR Regional Railways livery, the well-worn looking 42 year old DMU was actually part of the First North Western Class 101 fleet, then based at Manchester Longsight Depot and seeing out their last days on services from Piccadilly to Marple, Rose Hill & Sheffield. The 101's staggered on until the final five sets were withdrawn from service on Christmas Eve 2003. Martyn Hilbert.
In Regional Railways livery, a well-filled First North Western Metro-Cammell Class 101, 101682 formed of cars 53256 & 51505, was stood at Romiley with a Manchester Piccadilly to Sheffield service on May 12th 2001. The remaining fleet of Longsight allocated 101's saw out their last stint of operation working services from Piccadilly to Marple, Rose Hill, New Mills Central and Sheffield, before the last units were withdrawn on Christmas Eve 2003. This class 101 DMU, with DMBS E53257 leading, has just passed Gateshead Greensfield depot, which still had an allocation of mainline locomotives at the time in 1987 (including classes 31, 47 and 56). Graeme Phillips Collection.

The Industrial Railway Society "Rowntree Requiem" Railtour at Rowntree's Halt, York, on April 11, 1987. One of the shortest travelled railtours ever to run on the national network in the UK, the IRS organised the tour to coincide with their AGM held in York the same afternoon. The tour started from York at 12.35 and ran to the Rowntree Staff Halt on the Foss Island freight branch arriving at 12.45. It then returned to York at 13.10 with a 13.20 arrival giving a total of 45mins in service and a route mileage of just 2m 48ch (2½ miles) for the round trip. Six Bells Junction notes the vehicle as 53258 + 54053. Adrian Nicholls.
Class 101 DMBS on Laira depot, 8 July 1989. The vehicle was never allocated to the Western region, it had been withdrawn from Heaton in September 1988 and would be cut at Vic Berry's circa late 1989. Keith Miller.
A four-car Class 101 formation (front set E50259 + E56070) with a van on the rear arrives at Haltwhistle with a Carlisle - Newcastle service in March 1976. Hugh Llewelyn.
The 1255 Darlington-Hartlepool seen at Hartburn Junction, Stockton, on 18/12/1980. The trailer is 56391, the power car may be E50259. John Carter.
On 29-12-1980 E50259 + E56381 are seen with the 1115 Saltburn - Darlington service at South Bank. South Bank station was demolished and a new station built slightly nearer to Middlesbrough, the much simplified trackwork now gives no hint of this stations existence. John Carter.
E50259 + E59104 + E50149 at Middlesbrough on May 9th, 1982. John Carter.

A 2-car Class 101 DMU, with DMC(L) E50261 (of Darlington depot) nearest the camera, is seen at Whitby in June 1975. Such power-twin formations were less common in the 1970s, so this pair has probably had its centre car(s) removed for maintenance. Graeme Phillips Collection.
Cars E53262 E59075 E53150 wait at Whitby to return to Darlington via Middlesbrough, sometime in 1984. With their day out at the seaside drawing to a close, the steady stream of boarding passengers slam the heavy doors behind them and locate a comfortable but springy seat. There is a distinctive smell, and windows and other fittings vibrate as the engines idle. As departure time comes, the guard buzzes to the driver to move off, and the train slowly pulls away through the gears, to set off on a scenic journey of 35 miles to Middlesbrough, which, with 15 intermediate stops including reversal at Battersby, will take almost 90 minutes. Graeme Phillips Collection.
E50263 leads a Newcastle-Darlington train past Wheatleywell Lane, Plawsworth, early 1982. Interestingly the rear DMC has been replaced by a DMBS. The first class accommodation in the leading car appears to have been downgraded as there's no yellow stripe above the windows. Elsewhere on www.railcar.co.uk, it's reported that this set was formed of vehicles E50263 + E59063 + E59084 + E51211 at that time, which is consistent with the vehicle types seen in this view. Simon Hadden.
