This 1959 Derby Suburban Class 127 DMU vehicle is now in its second role as a parcels unit is set 916 (55976 + 55986). This car 55976 was originally numbered 51625 and was later preserved. Taken at Crewe on the 11th June 1988. Andrew J Crowther.

Now in its second role, but originally built as 4 car units, is this 1959 Derby Suburban now Class 127 DMU, set 916 (55986 + 55976). From new these units were almost exclusively used on the London St Pancras - Bedford services as 4-car units before being displaced in June 1983, in 1985 22 redundant power cars (maost of which had been stored at Carlisle) were rebuilt to form 11 two car parcels units, car A was for Newspapers and car B was for Express Parcels, they lasted in service until 1989. When the Class 127 DMUs finally bowed out of the St. Pancras - Bedford services, 22 power cars were resurrected from store at Carlisle Upperby (one of them, the pioneer 51591, was re-claimed from the NRM) and converted for parcels use. They were formed into 11 two car sets and allocated to Longsight in Manchester. Here set 918 with 55978 at the rear of 55968 is being led by set 912 (55972 & 55982) at Stafford, 20/Aug/1988. Class 127 55984, set number 914, is seen inside the factory at Tyseley while undergoing repairs on 01.04.1989. This car was rebuilt from 51639, from a passenger car into a parcels carrying car, complete with roller doors. These sets normally kept to formation, but 55984's partner 55974 was scrapped early on, and on this day it was partnered with 55971. Andy Cole.
