104 DMU

W in 9/85 from Newton Heath class 104 DMBS 53475 was dispatched to Derby RTC for departmental use. It never received its allocated departmental number ADB 977342 and was supposedly withdrawn from departmental use in 11/85 with no work undertaken and allocated for scrap. It clung on in a twilight existence for several years before being allocated to the the DM&EE (Divisional Mechanical & Electric Engineers), downgraded to unpowered status as hauled stock and given the TOPS code QXV. After languishing for several years at Derby it was put to use as a Carriage Washing Machine Test Vehicle. What this entailed isn't documented but I suspect it was just used to check clearances and capabilities of refurbished or new carriage washers. To that end it paid a visit to Ashford probably to test the new Down Yard Carriage Washer after which it spent months dumped in Ashford Down Yard labelled as condemned. It eventually went to Vic Berry's in Leicester being broken up in 12/88. Adrian Nicholls.

104 DMU

Class 104 BRCW built DMU's were pretty much standard traction for the Wigan to Kirkby branch back in the 1980's ahead of the mass invasion by Pacer Railbuses by the mid 1980's. A Newton Heath allocated 2-car set waits with the 12.29 to Manchester Victoria at the single platform halt on 24 July 1985, 54176 closest. Adrian Nicholls.

123 DMU

A class 123 Swindon "Inter-City" set approaches Doncaster with the 12.45 Manchester Piccadilly to Cleethorpes on 28 January 1984. Adrian Nicholls.

114 DMU

On a chilly winters afternoon a Lincoln allocated 2-car class 114 Derby Heavyweight unit lead by vehicle E53021 calls at Rotherham Masborough station with the 16.05 Doncaster to Sheffield on 28 January 1984. Rotherham Masborough was built as a substantial four platform station serving two routes although by this date only those platforms on the former Midland mainline had a service, the far two here were on the route from Chesterfield via Barrow Hill and obsolete being on a freight only line. The station was poorly sited in the town so South Yorkshire PTE paid British Rail for Rotherham Central on the former GCR line to be reopened along with a short connecting line called the Holmes Chord. This spur allowed trains from the Sheffield line to reach the new station which opened on 11/5/87 and brought about the closure of Rotherham Masborough. Adrian Nicholls.

101 DMU

3-car class 101 DMU set C811 (51801 + 59548 + 51519) is seen approaching Llandeilo with the 10.50 Shrewsbury to Swansea on 2 July 1983. The Central Wales Line from Shrewsbury to Swansea tended to be worked in the early 1980's by power twins of either class 101 but mostly class 120 Swindon Cross Country sets. Adrian Nicholls.

110 DMU

A Class 110 DMU sits at Manchester Victoria waiting to work the 14.55 to York via Todmorden on 3 October 1985. These powerful DMU's fitted with 180hp Rolls Royce engines were synonymous with the Calder Valley route via Todmorden and the class were known as "Calder Valley sets" for many years. They had spent most of their working lives allocated to Brardford Hammerton Street Depot for use on the route between York, Leeds, Bradford and Manchester but when the shed closed in 1984 the Calder Valley sets all transferred to Neville Hill Depot in Leeds. On the right in one of the station sidings is brand new Railbus set 142 006 only a couple of weeks old in Manchester PTE livery. Sadly in this case the new Pacer train wasn't in any way a match for what it replaced. Adrian Nicholls.

120 DMU

2 x 2-car class 120 DMU's with set C602 (presumably 50649 + 50698) leading set C605 call at Llandrindod Wells on the Central Wales line with the 10.46 Shrewsbury to Swansea in May 1981. Adrian Nicholls.

117 DMU

Running over an hour late at this stage the Monmouthshire Railway Society "Maerdy Gras" railtour formed of 2 x class 117 3-car and a single car 121 DMU is seen at Aberpergwm on April 20, 1985. The train having stopped at the BR / NCB limit of operations. This being the view at the southern end of the train before it returned back down the valley to Jersey Marine. Adrian Nicholls.

114 DMU

A Derby Heavyweight 2-car DMU set is seen at Sleaford soon after arrival with train 2K21 the 14.28 SO Doncaster to Sleaford on 30 December 1985. It will return as 2K40 the 16.06 to Lincoln Central. Most trains on the joint line back then ran through from Doncaster to Peterborough but this one was the exception. Adrian Nicholls.

123 DMU

One of the "Swindon Inter-City" class 123 DMU sets is seen in the carriage sidings recess line to the south of Sheffield Midland station on 21/04/84. By this date the units were on borrowed time and the mainstay of there work was Trans Pennine diagrams between Hull / Cleethorpes and Manchester via the Hope Valley route. Adrian Nicholls.

100 DMU

With Tyseley in Birmingham and Manchester Longsight Depot having small allocations of the remaining class 100 DMU vehicles by 1981 it was somewhat surprising to see this hybrid set formed of a class 100 DMBS and a class 101 DMC or DTC coupled behind the more usual class 120 "Swindon cross country" set on the Central Wales line. The train is departing north from Llandrindod Wells with the 10.10 Swansea to Shrewsbury on Friday 29/05/81. Adrian Nicholls.

120 DMU

On a grey late spring morning one of Cardiff's 2-car class 120 sets leads a four car DMU formation into a busy Llandrindod Wells station working the 10.10 Swansea to Shrewsbury. 29/05/81. Adrian Nicholls.

104 DMU

On March 3rd 1962 a BRC&W set (DMBS M50534 and presumably DTC M56177) and Met-Camm set are seen at Stechford working the 12.50pm Birmingham New Street - Coventry service. The vehicles would be allocated to Ryecroft depot at this time. Michael Mensing.

blue-pullman DMU

A diesel Pullman set gets some attention in Birmingham Snow Hill as it waits to depart with the 4.50pm Paddington - Wolverhampton service on 9 April 1962. On the right Western hydraulic D1002 can be seen on display. Michael Mensing.

120 DMU

Three Cross-Country sets form a nine-car DMU formation with a tail load (possibly a horsebox) working the 4.08pm Birmingham Snow Hill - Oxford - Paddington over Lapworth troughs on 20 September 1961. Two sets (front and rear) are of Swindon build, the centre one a GRC&W, the two types can be told apart by the quantity of roof vents. DMBCL W50701 leads, W59290 is behind. With three buffet cars on the train, and no through access between the three sets, would all three buffets be manned? Michael Mensing.

101 DMU

M51190 leads a two-car Met-Camm DMU seen north of Barratt Green in August 1964. It carries its shed code (2G Rycroft) on either side of the cab. Michael Mensing.

101 DMU

A refurbished two-car Class 101 working with a Class 101 DMBS / Class 103 DTC hybrid set seen at Llandudno Junction on 11 March 1978. Michael Mensing.

101 DMU

Class 101 set B810 (presumably 51799 + 59539 + 51808) passing Stapleton Road station with the 3.30pm Bristol Temple Meads - Cardiff Central service on 14 February 1981. Michael Mensing.
