I photographed this Diesel Parcels Unit, carrying the set number 911, at Northampton in October 1986. The set is made up of vehicles 55981/55971, converted from Class 127 cars 51612/51597. Both vehicles had been new in August 1959 and were converted to DPUs in May 1985. The unit was withdrawn from service in May 1989 and both vehicles were scrapped by Mayer Newman at Snailwell. Seen at Buxton on 3rd October 1986 in what is now in its second role, but originally built as 4 car units is this 1959 Derby Suburban now a Longsight allocated class 127 dmu set 915, 55985 (51619) + 55984 (51639). From new these units were almost exclusively used on the London St Pancras - Bedford services as 4-car units before being displaced in June 1983, in 1985 22 redundant power cars which had been stored at Carlisle were rebuilt to form 11 two car parcels units, car A was for Express Parcels and car B was for Newspapers, they lasted in service until 1989. A tidy looking 08744 had come to the rescue of a failed ex Class 127 Parcels DMU (Set 919 - M55979 & M55969) awaiting the road at the North end of Preston station on July 4th 1987. 08744 had been a regular station pilot at Preston for many years. Martyn Hilbert.
