In happy days when Selby was on the ECML and Deltics still roamed freely, a Swindon built 'Inter-City' Class 123 Motor Brake Second (MBS) E52087 was bringing-up the rear of a Manchester Piccadilly to Hull service, awaiting departure from Selby on September 12th 1981. The former Western Region car had become part of a Class 123/124 'Transpennine' set allocated to Hull Botanic Gardens. The full four-car formation being E52087 (123), E59767 (124), E59765 (124) & E51964 (124). Martyn Hilbert.
One of my very few encounters with a Trans Pennine dmu set was that day, 20/9/81. Here I am waiting at Doncaster as the 12.45 from Manchester Piccadilly arrives with Class 123 E52087 leading. Now this was not one of the genuine Trans Pennine cars of course and was a 1977 transfer from the WR. I recall these units when I lived at Kingsbury in 1964. They were then in green livery but with the end connecting doors painted yellow which gave rise to my nickname for them of 'Ironing Board Units'. I think they worked Derby to Cardiff trains or something similar in those days. Anyway this terminating service was to form my train forward to Sheffield at 15.10. Gerard Fletcher.

E52087 heads along the down relief lines at Oxmardyke on 5th April 1983 at the front of a Trans-Pennine service to Hull. Gilberdyke station can be seen in the background and this view shows a fine variety of the semaphore signalling in use at the time. Syd Young.
Having just celebrated it's 21st birthday and one month before been withdrawn E52087 passing Walton leading a Manchester Piccadilly to Sheffield train diverted from the Hope valley line 11th February 1984. Keith Long.
Class 123 DMU no. 52087 heading a mixed class 123/124 Trans-Pennine set at Morecambe on 3/Mar/1984. After the cessation of the display of headcodes, most class 123s eventually had the headcode panels removed completely and standard DMU marker lights installed in re-panelled cab front as seen here. They operated some services from the North West to the East Coast in their twilight years. Robert Chilton.
On arrival at Sheffield, I made my way to the other end of my unit and found the leading car was a genuine Trans-Pennine beast. The full set formation was : E51964 (seen here) + E59765 + E59767 + E52087. What a sad state E51964 presents here, it reminds me of a WD 2-8-0 in the final days of steam. These units ran in pristine condition in the early years. I do recall to this day though, the comfortable ride I enjoyed that day. 20/9/81. Gerard Fletcher.
