Trans-Pennine power car E51964 inside the DMU Shop at Doncaster Works on 8 June 1980. Stuart Mackay Collection.
On arrival at Sheffield, I made my way to the other end of my unit and found the leading car was a genuine Trans-Pennine beast. The full set formation was : E51964 (seen here) + E59765 + E59767 + E52087. What a sad state E51964 presents here, it reminds me of a WD 2-8-0 in the final days of steam. These units ran in pristine condition in the early years. I do recall to this day though, the comfortable ride I enjoyed that day. 20/9/81. Gerard Fletcher.
A Swindon DMU with Class 124 E51964 closest stabled at Sheffield, date unknown. Paul Redmond.
Morecambe Promenade, 18th August 1982. The train of 51964, 59834, 59770 and 51960 had just worked in from Lancaster. Robert Frise.
A class 124, by now reduced to four cars just (51955/51969/59765/51964), approaches Brough on Christmas Eve 1976 on a TransPennine working, the 11.47 Hull to Liverpool Lime St. Leonard Rogers.
A Class 111 DMU stabled at Sheffield with DMCL E51560 closest. Trans-Pennine E51964 is on the right. Date unknown. Paul Redmond.
Two Class 124 Trans-Pennine units at Sheffield on 16/5/81, headed by E51952 and E51964. Chris Lings.
In happy days when Selby was on the ECML and Deltics still roamed freely, a Swindon built 'Inter-City' Class 123 Motor Brake Second (MBS) E52087 was bringing-up the rear of a Manchester Piccadilly to Hull service, awaiting departure from Selby on September 12th 1981. The former Western Region car had become part of a Class 123/124 'Transpennine' set allocated to Hull Botanic Gardens. The full four-car formation being E52087 (123), E59767 (124), E59765 (124) & E51964 (124). Martyn Hilbert.
On the bright afternoon of September 20th 1981, a variety of dmus grace Sheffield station. The identity of the Class 108 in the middle background is unknown,on the left in the shadows is a Trans-Pennine set with E51964 at the front, while out in the sun is a sparkling Metro-Cammell Class 111 three car set : E51552 + E59106 + E51542. Gerard Fletcher.
E51952 has a freshly painted front end when seen at Brough on the rear of a Trans-Pennine service to Hull on 2nd September 1983. The repainting had been done at BG after a minor bump. The window rubbers, normally left black, were painted as they had a fair amount of paint on them already. The unit has the number "52" hand-painted on the front, 51961 and 51964 also had numbers painted on the front end. It has had red bulbs installed in the old headcode panel, presumably to prevent damage to the nicely painted lamp-brackets! Syd Young.
