Class 101 set B820 (51512 + 59093 + 51500) at Yeovil Junction on 11/10/1980 while working the Great Western Society 'Devon Rambler' railtour. Although still in blue livery, the front ends have had the headcode boxes removed. The destination blind has been painted over. Unusually, the yellow band for the first class accommodation has been extended above the first door, which also has the number 1. This was a long-term three-car formation, which I observed operating still intact in the Leeds area in 1989. Both driving motors 51500 and 51512 were late survivors, and 51512 is preserved. A tidy looking three-car Class 101 DMU leaning into the curve as it departed from Dawlish with the 18.20 Exeter St Davids to Newton Abbot (all stations) service on a glorious Saturday evening, May 26th 1990. W51500 leads, the TBS should be W59093 and an unknown DMBS on the rear. This set was one of many Class 101 & 108 units sent to the West Country as a stop-gap following the transfer of the Devon & Cornwall Class 142 'Skipper' fleet to the North in 1988, and before the transfer of almost new Class 150/2 Sprinter units in 1992. A three-car Class 101 DMU formed of cars 53157, 59093 & 51500 (829) was arriving at Starcross with the 16.35 Paignton to Exeter Central service on May 30th 1990. The 101 was one of several first generation DMU's transferred to Plymouth Laira following the demise of the Class 142 'Skipper' fleet in the West Country. Many sets were cobbled together until sufficient Class 150/2 Sprinters became available. Martyn Hilbert.
