Class 101 Leven Kirkland Yard 23 Aug 1980. The 1980 Scottish Branch Line Society Tour was the Lothian & Fife Wanderer, formed 50243 + 59067 + 51224. Alistair Ness.
The Branch Line Society "Lothian and Fife" Railtour is seen at Dunfermline Upper station (closed to passengers in 1968) on 23 August 1980. Nearest the camera is car 50243, new in 1957. It would survive until 1992. The other cars were 59067 and 51224. Jeremy Chapter.
The Branch Line Society 'Lothian & Fife Wanderer', formed of Class 101 vehicles 50243 + 59067 + 51224, at Leven Kirkland Yard on 23 August 1980. Jeremy Chapter.
On 23rd August 1980 the BLS “Lothian & Fife Wanderer” covered a number of freight lines around Edinburgh and Fife, formed of 3 car Met Camm set 50243 + 59067 + 51224. I did not travel on this but chose to take some photos on the Granton branch, sadly only with a Kodak Instamatic. A little later that day, the tour passes through Abbeyhill station on the loop line to Piershill approaching what was originally a three way junction, left for Granton, straight ahead for Leith Central, right for Piershill and back to the ECML. This line was used for the Commonwealth Games shuttle to Meadowbank in 1986 but then disconnected when the ECML was electrified, although the tracks remain in place. Abbeyhill station was closed in 1964 with others on the route to the original Musselburgh terminus. Murray Liston.

I did not travel on this but chose to take some photos on the Granton branch, sadly only with a Kodak Instamatic. Heading south again, the tour passes through Trinity tunnel, and approaches Trinity Junction. The original line behind the photographer leads to Scotland St, used by trains from Edinburgh to Granton where they would have boarded the world’s first train ferry to Burntisland. The train will however follow the diversionary route via Powderhall opened in 1868 to allow Scotland St tunnel to be closed. This location is almost unrecognisable these days, being the “five ways” junction of cyclepaths which radiate along each of the former lines here. Murray Liston.

I did not travel on this but chose to take some photos on the Granton branch, sadly only with a Kodak Instamatic. After passing over West Harbour Road, the railtour heads uphill towards the oil terminal, over one of the few pieces of track joining the former North British and Caledonian systems in the city. On the left is the former Caledonian Railway goods depot, still in use today by William Waugh as a scrap recycler and which used to generate trainloads of scrap metal until the early 1970s. Murray Liston.

This one is at Trinity Junction looking into the sun, showing the DMU climbing the hill to Bangholm View and the summit at Ferry Road before dipping down to cross the Water of Leith near the now closed refuse terminal. Murray Liston.
The Branch Line Society "Lothian and Fife Wanderer" rail tour on 23 August 1980 is seen here at the erstwhile Cameron Bridge station on the Leven Railway. There is a possibily that a station may be reopened to serve the location during the 2020s, but not exactly on this site. The Metro-Cammell class 101 set comprised 51224 + 59067 + 50243. Jeremy Chapter.

I did not travel on this but chose to take some photos on the Granton branch, sadly only with a Kodak Instamatic. The tour stopped short of the West Granton Road bridge, at the point where locos ran round their tank trains. The gas works off to the right used to have a fascinating selection of standard and narrow gauge steam locos working an extensive internal system. Murray Liston.

After closure of the Granton branch a few years later this section continued in use to serve the Powderhall refuse terminal until a few years ago. Murray Liston.

A shot at Cosford on an unrecorded day in January 1991 as class 101 set T077, probably formed of 51228 + 53243, arrived for the stop at Cosford station. The signalman had been very prompt in returning the inner home signal to danger on this occasion. In addition to the first generation DMUs I was also at this spot to take pictures of class 20s on Ironbridge power Station MGRs. Peter Tandy.
DMU set LO603 (53968+53243) is seen pulling out of Tal-y-cafn station on the Conway Valley line with the 10.25 Llandudno to Blaenau Ffestiniog on May 4, 1992. By this date the first generation DMU's were in the twilight of their careers and the leading vehicle here 53968 was withdrawn two months later on July 2nd with the trailing vehicle 54243 making it to October 1992.
