Withdrawn 59303 at Blackpool North on Thursday 2 September 2004. It, and 59539 to the left, had been stored there for several years, and they were due to move that day to their new homes in preservation that. Long out-of-ticket, they had had the axles ultrasonically tested and a Fragonset Class 31 was hired to move them to a nearby 'depot' with a loading point. Unfortunately it was found that there is a tight corner on the way into the depot, with bollards on the pavement which prevented the Allely's lorry from turning. The move was aborted. The council agreed to remove the bollards, and the move was rescheduled for a later date. Paul Moxon.

The BLS ran the Tayside Railtour a last journey along the branch from Kinnaber Junction to Brechin which started from Dundee on a Sunday morning, 26 August 1979. Here the Class 101 DMU (50144 + 59303 + 50254) sits at the platform awaiting the return journey. The station is now part of the Caledonian Railway Preservation Society. Alistair Ness.

On 26 August 1979 the Branch Line Society ran a tour from Dundee to Brechin. This line closed to passengers in 1952 and eventually to all traffic in 1981. In 1993 a small section of the line at the Brechin end opened as a preserved railway. I believe the formation of the train to have been 50254 + 59303 + 50144. Jeremy Chapter.

Haymarket's 101302 led by Sc53290 (presumably with 59303 + 53197) crosses under the City of Glasgow Union Railway at Salkeld St, Glasgow on a working to East Kilbride - ca 1986. Andrew McConnell.
ScotRail hybrid d.m.u. (53724 (120) on the rear + 59303 (101) + 51240 (101)) departs Ayr with the 11.00 Ayr to Girvan train, 22-11-1986. A classic smoky DMU departure, not long before Class 156 Sprinters took over. Gordon Thomson.
Waverley station at 16.14 on 9/5/87 sees the 16.15 to Dundee, on the left, preparing to depart. Alongside is another rake just arrived e.c.s., probably from Haymarket depot. This will form the 16.42 to Cowdenbeath. The leading car on the left is 53290 (forming set 101 302 along with 59303 and 53197) - this set is coupled to 51227/59045/53264 (set 101 305). The leading car on the right is 53747 (forming set 101 317 along with 59048 and 51243) - this set is coupled to 51456/59555/51520 (set 101 330). Leonard Rogers.
Set 101 324 (53746/59303/51253) comes off the Forth Bridge and into North Queensferry station, forming the 16.00 Edinburgh - Cowdenbeath, on 9/4/88. Leonard Rogers.

Preston station in May 1990 and unit LO347 contains two DMBSs, with 53216 nearest the camera, the other two vehicles are presumably 59303 + 53294. John McIntyre.
In a view now blighted by unchecked tree growth and the planting of some conifers along the lineside, a Met/Cam Class 101 three-car DMU was climbing Farington Curve, making a rare appearance, working the 14.05 Blackpool South to Colne service on August 18th 1990. Formed of DMBS 53294, TS 59303 and DMBS 53216 the unit was a Chester set (CH347) and may have been borrowed by Newton Heath, as this was the period when the Class 142 fleet was ailing, and with many examples stored, all sorts of first generation DMU's were having an extended period of operation to keep things going. 101 692, with 53170 leading and 59303 visible behind, leaves Waverley station on 12/7/93, forming the 16.27 to Kirkcaldy. The third vehicle in the set was, of course, 53253. This pair of power cars subsequently acquired Caledonian blue livery. On the right can be glimpsed 53315 at the head of set 874, waiting to leave on the 16.34 to Glenrothes. This was during the relatively short period of a year or so when Haymarket was operating freshly-refurbished three-car class 101 sets nos.101 691-4. By the end of the year 101 692 would have lost its centre trailer and in Feb.'94 it was transferred to Corkerhill. Leonard Rogers.
