Manchester - Buxton

These services were introduced on October 8, 1956. The were initially operated by Longsight allocated Derby Lightweights. After just six months blue square units began to arrive at Longsight and these would take over, initially these were Class 111s and 104s, Class 100s would also appear (including auto-gear fitted M50358), but the BRC&W sets would become the main traction for many years. In the later days of First Generation DMU use 108s and 101s would be common.

Class 104 DMU at Buxton

February 1970

A dmu arrives at Buxton from Manchester in February 1970 on the LNWR route via Stockport Edgeley & Chapel-en-le-Frith. The white roof was a Buxton depot trademark. The tracks in the foreground led from the station to a junction on the line to Ashbourne by this time cut back to limestone quarries south of Buxton. The train is passing under the bridge which carried the branch line into the Up sidings. Pete LG99.
