Machynlleth - Pwllheli

Route map Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth and Pwllheli

This Cambrian Line service was normally operated by Chester allocated units, which could also be stabled at Machynlleth shed. At Machynlleth (and Dovey Junction) they would connect with Shrewsbury - Aberystwyth services, although there were also some through workings.

The route map is from the 1966 public timetable.

Class 101 DMU at Tywyn

7th July 1974

The loneliness of the long-distance railcar (with apologies to Alan Sillitoe, Tom Courtenay and others for the title.) A first generation diesel multiple unit leaves Tywyn on the Cambrian coast with an up service on Sunday 7th July 1974. The viewpoint is the Neptune Road bridge and on the left the narrow gauge tracks of the Talyllyn Railway, which terminates here, are clearly visible. It's a long formation (nine or ten vehicles), the closest five or six vehicles are Class 101s, the cab facing us has a Tyseley set number so is a three-car, the vehicles at the far end have different roof vent alignments so are different types. Tom Harper.
