Once a through route from Preston to Liverpool, in May 1970 the line was split at Ormskirk with through passengers transferring from the Preston - Ormskirk DMU service to a connecting Ormskirk - Liverpool electric service.
The services used the same platform, buffer stops separated the two lines.
The van of this two-car Class 108 set is being loaded before departure from Ormskirk station in 1970. Steve Davies Collection.
A two-car Class 108 DMU in the East Lancs platform at Preston circa 1970. Ormskirk is on the destination blind. Adrian Sutterby Collection.
Complete with their tail lamps, A pair of Newton Heath allocated Class 108's stand in bay platforms 3A & 4A at the south end of Preston Station on March 18th 1974. The unit on the left was being used on services to Ormskirk, whilst the one the right was stabled, although if the destination blind is to be believed it has seen some recent use on the Windermere Branch. Class 108's were the norm on the Ormskirk services at the time. The 108 on the right has set number NH449 in the cab window (and another partially seen behind it), the 108 on the left has 'IL7' in the window - probably a partial headcode chalked on the reverse of a set number board, Martyn Hilbert.
A Class 105 DMU at Rufford, Lancashire, 25/03/1977. Seen entering the station with an Ormskirk-Preston service. Graeme Phillips Collection.
A Class 108 waits to leave Preston with an Ormskirk service on August 26, 1977. A 105 and 108 sits further up the platform with a Blackpool train. Walter Burt.
In Rail Blue livery and complete with its tail lamp, a Class 108 two-car DMU formed of cars M56265 & M50982 was departing from Croston with a Preston to Ormskirk service on September 16th 1977. The station still had its LMS concrete post lamps with tin shades and bare blubs. In the distance the loading gauge was still in-situ at the entrance to the trackless former goods yard. Ahead of the DMU the single track of this former main line is visible regaining its alignment along the former Down Line. When the route was downgraded and singled circa 1970, the track was slewed across to the Up Side at Croston to serve the single remaining operational platform. Martyn Hilbert.
A two-car Class 108 DMU, formed of cars M56265 (Complete with its First Class saloon) & DMBS M50982, were arriving at Croston with a Preston to Ormskirk service on September 16th 1977. The station still retained its LMS concrete platform lamps, and the former Down platform is visible on the left, including the holes and the patch in the stonework of the bridge, where steps once connected Station Road to the platform, a legacy from the days when this was a double track main line from Preston to Liverpool Exchange. Martyn Hilbert.
An ex-Eastern Region Cravens Class 105 DMU (the DTC appears to be 56127), was stood in bay platform 3C at Preston with a service to Ormskirk (despite the destination display) on October 22nd 1977. Martyn Hilbert.
A two-car Class 108 in Rail Blue (the DMBS at the rear is M50944), arrives at Ormskirk with a service from Preston on April 24th 1978. There were still a few lineside structures still remaining from the days when this was a double-track through route. The antics of the passenger in the rear trailer car is a lesson in the perils of slam-door stock. Martyn Hilbert.
Having arrived from Ormskirk and complete with its oil tail lamp, the Class 108 with M50968 closest was stood in bay platform 3A at Preston Station on May 15th 1978. The unit would work back to West Lancashire with the 15.36 departure to Ormskirk. Martyn Hilbert.
In the fading light of a January afternoon at Ormskirk in 1979, Class 108 Motor Brake Second M50968 was at the rear of a service from Preston. The guard was waiting to collect the tail lamp for placing at the other end of the unit for the return working. The lower portion of the redundant signal box was still visible on the disused down side platform. The appearance of double track is the emergency loop then still in place to bypass the two buffer stops on the former up side. Martyn Hilbert.
With the paraffin tail lamp moved to the cab front of Motor Brake Second M50764, the Cravens Power-Twin prepares to depart from a Wintery Ormskirk with the 09.19 to Preston in January 1979. During this period the Newton Heath based Class 105s were not common on the Ormskirk Line, the Derby built Class 108s were the normal fare. The weather was a total surprise on that day, no snow on leaving Preston, the wintery weather started across Farington Moss and got progressively worse towards Merseyside. Martyn Hilbert.
A Class 108 DMU in Ormskirk station in 1979. John Law.
With its tail lamp in place and the brake van door open, a two-car Class 108 DMU formed of cars M56251 + M50968 was stood at Ormskirk with a service to Preston on April 7th 1979. Martyn Hilbert.
A view along the then double track Ormskirk route on Farington Moss with a Class 104 on the 11.55 Ormskirk to Preston service on a warm May 11th 1981. The two-car DMU is running between the occupation crossings at Naptha Lane and Lodge Lane, the then full-height chimney at the former Moss's Cotton Mill in Lostock Hall is prominent in this flat landscape. Closest is DTSL M56176 working with DMBS M50535. Martyn Hilbert.
A Class 108 DMU departs from Rufford station, date unknown. Stuart Parkinson.
A Class 105 DMU with M56118 closest in Preston station with an Ormskirk service on Thursday 8 April 1982. David Russon.
A Class 108 DMU arrives into Croston station on 6 April 1984. Stuart Parkinson.
A Class 108 DMU arrives into Croston station with a Preston - Ormskirk station on 6 April 1984. Stuart Parkinson.
With the driver having just collected the single line token from the signal box, a two-car Derby Class 108 DMU formed of cars M51565 & M53925 was getting underway from Midge Hall with a Preston to Ormskirk service on June 1st 1985. Martyn Hilbert.
