Just before 7pm, cars E53164 E59246 E53188 (two vehicles with brake vans) call at Middlesbrough with the 18:20 Saltburn - Darlington. E53164, nearest the camera, is receiving attention from a railway worker, was later preserved. The DMU visible to the left is DTS(L) no E54408 at the rear of a service to Saltburn. The use of a power-trailer formation such as this may have also been due to stock shortages, as DMUs in the north-east were generally formed as power-twins by this date, to have any hope of maintaining accelerated schedules intended for Pacers. Cars E54365 E53164 are just about to enter Boldon Colliery station, Tyne & Wear, with the 07:39 Middlesbrough-Newcastle on 19/07/1983. Behind the train is a bridge carrying the line from Tyne Dock to Consett, which crossed the Newcastle-Sunderland line at what was known as Pontop Crossing - in this view, it is still protected by semaphore signals, but these were replaced in the mid-1980s. Boldon Colliery station was renamed Brockley Whins in 1991, and it became part of the Tyne & Wear Metro system when the Sunderland extension was opened in 2002. Graeme Phillips Collection.

An unusual view of the west end of Waverley station, Edinburgh, on the morning of 5/7/89. No trains were moving this day - it was the day of one of the weekly strikes staged by the NUR that summer. Almost every platform is filled with stabled stock. Complete with a Father Christmas in the offside cab window, the retro BR green liveried three-car Class 101 DMU (101685) formed of cars 53160, 59539 & 53164 was stood in bay platform 4C at Preston on December 17th 1994. The unit was operating the Ribble Valley Rail Santa Specials between Clitheroe and Preston. Class 101 unit 101685, made up of 53160/59539/53164. on a Blaenau Ffestiniog-Llandudno working at Llandudno Junction on 1 August 1997. This unit was built by Metropolitan-Cammell and dates from 1957/1957. 101685 spent its final few years in service in green livery, as seen here, and was one of the last 5 units withdrawn from service at Newton Heath on 24 December 2003.
