Cumbernauld was served by through services from Glasgow Buchanan Street towards Falkirk and Stirling until Buchanan Street station closed in November 1966. DMUs were then introduced to a Cumbernauld - Springburn service, connecting with the North Clyde Line electric services at Springburn.[1]
In the late 1980s the service was extended into Glasgow Queen Street, requiring a reversal at Cowlairs, a link line would be built later to eliminate the reversal.
A hybrid Class 101 set at Springburn on February 2nd 1976. It has a Class 122 DTS for a centre car, Eastfield had three at the time - 56291, 56297 and 56299. Arnie Furniss.
A 6-car diesel unit formation is seen setting back into Cumbernauld station after reversing by the signal box on 6 May 1977. At this time the service operated was from Springburn to Cumbernauld. There's a lovely little shunt signal on the opposite platform. losest appears to be a DMBS (no pipes on the roof for the toilet) - and the front roof vents have been removed (unusual to be done this early). It is followed by a three-car set formed of a suburban car (a Class 116 DMS?) - with two Class 101 cars. A two-car Class 101 is on the rear. Jeremy Chapter.
101339 in Springburn station after arriving with the 17:35 from Cumbernauld. The vehicles were recorded as 51527 + 59562 + 51467. There is an old set number 180 in the left cab window. Stuart Mackay Collection.
101 339 is seen in Springburn station in July 1981, with Class 303 EMUs on the right. Norman Smart.
Set 101 333 (presumably 51459 + 59541 + 51805) seen in Springburn station, date unknown. Phil Deane Collection.
107 340 on a Cumbernauld to Springburn service has just passed Cardowan Signal Box. The connection into Cardowan Colliery is just visible beyond the Signal Box. Closest is a Class 107 DMCL, the other two vehicles are 101s. As the DMBS is a 101 the other end probably has a different set number. Spannerman37025.
A Class 101 DMU departs Springburn with the 13:59 service to Cumbernauld on Friday 18th June 1982. Passengers from central Glasgow and further afield will have arrived in the adjacent Class 303 EMU. With the closure of Buchanan Street station in 1966, direct services between Glasgow and Cumbernauld ceased, there being no direct route from Cumbernauld to Queen Street. Consequently, a shuttle service was provided between Cumbernauld and Springburn to provide a connection into and out of the electric services to and from Queen Street Low Level station. A through service to Queen St high level was eventually reinstated in 1989, initially reversing at Eastfield until the Cowlairs chord opened in 1993. Nowadays, the line to Cumbernauld has been electrified and it is possible to catch trains to both Queen Street (High Level and Low Level) and Glasgow Central (Low Level). Brian McDevitt.
Class 116 DMU set 116385 (50090 and presumably 59344 + 50132) in Springburn station on 5 January 1983. Brian Daniels.
Met-Camm 101 unit 101330 (presumably 51520 + 59555 + 51456) waits at Springburn with the 15:27 service to Cumbernauld on 15th September 1984. Bruce Galloway.
The first generation DMU's were renowned for oil leaks and copious exhaust as Springburn station bares witness with the black sticky oil soaked track and a sky full of smoke. ScotRail class 101 set 101 339 is seen departing with the 17.27 to Cumbernauld despite the station clock proclaiming its "11.10". When taken on 9 July 1985 the station was in effect the terminus of two passenger routes although the DMU is on a through mainline (the Garnkirk & Glasgow line built by the Caledonian Railway). North Clyde electric services to Milngavie via Queen Street Low Level using the bay platforms (the 303 behind the DMU). North of Springburn the "mainline" saw just one passenger train a day each way that being the West Highland Sleeper service which reversed at Cowlairs West Junction. Other than that its primary use was for freight and empty stock workings until the opening of the Cowlairs chord in 1992 which allowed the Cumbernauld trains to run direct into Queen St. Adrian Nicholls.
A three-car Class 101 DMU circa January 1988 at Sighthill East. It has climbed up from the Springburn branch and is heading for Cumbernauld, the line on the left leads to St. Rollox works, Barnhill station is on the right. Brian Ward.
A Class 107 DMU seen at Cumbernauld circa late summer 1989. Brian Ward.
A Class 107 - thought to be 52023 - sitting in Cumbernauld station circa late 1989. Brian Ward.
107729 (presumably 51989 + 59795 + 52023) heads out of Cumbernauld station circa late 1989. Brian Ward.
