Barrhead was on the Glasgow - Kilmarnock route, those trains also providing a service to Barrhead, and the timetable was shared. The timetables show that few trains terminated at Barrhead in the early years, most were Kilmarnock services. By the mid-1970s there were more Barrhead trains, but no Sunday service.
When DMUs were introduced St Enoch was used as the Glasgow terminus. When it closed in June 1966 operations switched to Glasgow Central station.
DMUs used would normally be Hamilton sets until it closed, then Ayr, Eastfield and Corkerhill units.
First Generation DMU use on the service ended in 2000 when the Corkerhill 1016xx sets were transferred to Manchester.
